Last Saturday, a very keenly contested local derby Caledonia Division 2 (NW) fixture between Moray and RAF Kinloss, was narrowly won by the Elgin side by 44 points to 38.
As a consequence of the recently announced proposed closure of the airbase, this match was more than likely the last time these teams would meet in the league. It was therefore very fitting that this encounter turned out as probably the best seen between the two, with 12 tries being scored.
Moray took a 7-0 lead in the 5th minute when wing-forward Neil Wiseman scored when he pounced on a loose tap back at a Kinloss line-out close to their line. Wing Dale Smith added the conversion points.
Seven minutes later it was 7-7 when scrum-half Copper broke blind behind a scrum and fed his wing to run in a converted try.
In the 17th minute, however, the Elgin side regained the lead when centre Andrew McBean scored an unconverted try after a good break from stand-off Johnny Haslam.
Three minutes later, the flyers moved into a 12-14 lead when they scored a converted try which emanated from a charge down of an attempted clearance kick.
The Kinloss side missed a penalty opportunity for an offside offence before the home side retook the lead after they too were awarded a penalty for offside.
The game had been end to end with the lead changing hands regularly but in the last 5 minutes, the visitors scored two converted tries to take a 15-28 half-time lead. The first was an intercepted try and the second was touched down after the stand-off side stepped his way through the home defence.
Moray started the second half the brighter and after 4 minutes reduced the lead. Good charging and offloading took play to a ruck in the 22. The ball was spun and full-back Ryan Anderson scored an unconverted try for 20-28.
Ten minutes later and after some pressing play in the opposition 22, the home side closed the gap further. Ball was picked up by No 8 Greig Smith at the base of a scrum 5 and he broke and passed inside to wing-forward Ross Joy who barged his way over the line. Dale Smith converted for 27-28.
The Elgin side were in the ascendancy at this time and in the 60th minute, they took the lead. Forwards and backs combined well through the middle of the park and prop Jason Ogg took ball at pace, broke the defence and scored under the posts. Dale Smith landed the conversion for 34-28.
Five minutes later, they extended their lead. Clean ball was taken at a line 10 metres out from the visitor’s goal line. The ball was moved wide and Ryan Anderson took the ball at a good angle to breach the defence and score. Dale Smith converted for 41-28.
The Moray side seemed to have control of the game but Kinloss had other ideas and in the 30th minute it was game on again. They took clean ball at a scrum on their 22 and a good handling backs move saw their wing score an unconverted try out wide to reduce the lead to 41-33.
The flyers were now the dominant side and five minutes later, they reduced the lead further. A scrum, 5 metres out, was won cleanly and the ball spun to the outside centre who made it to the line out wide. The conversion attempt narrowly missed to leave the score 41-38.
The last few minutes were nervy as far as the home side were concerned as they tried to get their hands on the ball to retain possession. Play was forced back to the visiting 22 from where they tried to launch an attack to try and get the winner. Moray kept up the pressure with strong tackling and rucking and with a matter of seconds to go, Kinloss handled on the deck to give a penalty 22 metres out. Dale Smith landed the penalty and the whistle went leaving the final score, Moray 44 RAF Kinloss 38.
The crowd had witnessed an excellent and exciting game of rugby from two committed teams, each of them scoring 6 tries with the difference being the two penalties Moray landed. Credit goes to both sets of players for all the effort they put into the match.
