MORAY 64 STRATHSPEY 0
Wed 13th Oct 2010
Moray scored ten tries last Saturday in comprehensively beating Strathspey by 64 points to nil in their latest Caledonia Division 2 (North West) league fixture at Morriston.

Both teams started the game with positive intent and in the first 10 minutes, the game ebbed from end to end.

In the 12th minute, however, the Elgin side took the lead. After some good pressure in the opposition 22 which drew in the defence, the ball was whipped out and centre Alex Strachan was left with enough room to run in the score. Stand-off Dale Smith converted for 7-0.

During a 5-minute spell midway through the half, the home side added two further tries for a 19-0 lead. The first was finished off by wing forward Mark Abenheimer after some good driving forward play and the second emanated from a break from their own 22 with wing Ewan Simpson being the recipient of the final pass.

Five minutes from half time, Moray scored a fourth and bonus point try. The score again started from a break in their own 22 with firstly full-back Ryan Anderson involved and then centre Marc Higgins taking the ball to a ruck. Quick ball was moved to prop Jason Ogg who charged and offloaded to No 8 Stuart Harrington to score. Dale Smith converted for 26-0.

Strathspey had the better of the final five minutes of the half but could not breach a well-organised and stout defence.

The Kingussie side started the second half as they finished the first and took the game to the home side but the good defensive work continued and kept them out.

After having soaked up the period of pressure, Moray scored two tries in quick succession to put he game beyond doubt.

Captain Marc Higgins broke from a deep position and offloaded to Jason Ogg. In contact he was aware of the support and shifted the ball to Ryan Anderson to score a try converted by Dale Smith for 33-0.

March Higgins was again involved in the second when he drew the defence and slipped the ball to replacement Jamie Durkin to run in the score. Dale Smith slotted the conversion for 40-0.

Although the game was all but over for them, Strathspey to their credit, still tried hard to get on the score sheet. The home defensive line however, was in no mood to let them through and some of their tackling was bone shaking.

The visitors tired in the final quarter of the match and Moray forced home their advantage by scoring four further tries.

The first was created by a simple pick up at the base of the scrum by Stuart Harrington and he offloaded to replacement James Henderson to score an unconverted try for 45-0.

Secondly, replacement James Taylor scored an opportunist and unconverted try when he followed up his own kick through to score after a break down in the visitor’s play.

Marc Higgins added the third when he took a good line and received a pass from Ryan Anderson and scored under the posts. He converted his own score for 57-0.

Finally, Marc Higgins made another great break and looked set to score but unselfishly, five metres out, he passed to second-row Colin Sharp to score. Dale Smith converted to leave the final score Moray 64 Strathspey 0.

After a very competitive start, Moray took control of the game and were very clinical in attack with backs and forwards combining well. In defence they had been exceptional, had put on their best defensive display of the season and had dealt comfortably with anything that the Kingussie side had thrown at them.

Strathspey named captain Marc Higgins as ‘Moray Player of the Match’ as he had been a persistent thorn in their side all afternoon and had been the key to so many of the home tries.

This Saturday sees a local derby league encounter when Moray take on RAF Lossiemouth at Morriston (3pm kick off).
