CALEDONIA FINALS DAY - SUNDAY 9TH MAY 2010
Fri 7th May 2010
Impressive results as three Moray teams through to Caledonia Finals Day

The first weekend of May, saw the U18s, the U16s and the U15s all in action as the season nears to a close. The U18s hosted Caithness at Morriston on Saturday in the semi-final of the Caledonia Cup competition.

With Caithness at full strength due to a number of their U18 players back from 1ST XV duty, it was always going to be a hard fought match.

However, the Moray lads showed real determination during the first half, when with Caithness capitalising on Moray mistakes and going ahead on penalties, the home responded well. The Moray scrum dominated the opposition right from the start; so much so, that despite two substitutions for Caithness, their front row collapsed completely and we were left with uncontested scrums after 20 minutes. This negated the tiring effect on the Caithness pack that would have resulted during the match with such dominance.

However, after half time, Moray started to reduce the mistakes and get some continuity in the play. It was very close right up to within 5 minutes of full time. At that stage, Moray were leading 27 - 24, then with the last play of the game, Caithness running the ball from their own half, saw an intercept of a loose pass for Laurie McCutcheon to win the sprint to the corner for the final score 32 - 24.

Dale Smith scoring under the posts on the way to 32-24 victory over Caithness. The other tries were two each from Dale Smith and Fraser Adams, but was an all round performance from the whole squad. A gritty, determined match from Moray sees them go to St Andrews on Sunday to play Aberdeen Grammar in the Cup Final.

Saturday also saw the U16s overcome Aberdeenshire in the Caledonia U16 Shield semi-final by 24-14. The trip to St Andrews on Sunday will see them face Dundee in the Shield final.

Moray’s U15s played on the Sunday against Strathie Sharks running out 50-0 winners in the Caledonia U15 Bowl Competition. Finals Day will see the U15s face Dunfermline, for what should be an interesting encounter.

It is a fantastic achievement for Moray Rugby Club to be represented at the Finals Day with three teams travelling to St Andrews. Good luck to all the players involved – it is day to enjoy and to celebrate the good rugby that has been played to get there.
