CALEDONIA U18 CUP
Thu 15th Apr 2010
Ellon U18 22 v 31 Moray U18

With the wintry weather finally clearing, Moray were able to travel through to Ellon on Sat 10th April in the quarter final of the Caledonia Cup.

The ‘second’ pitch at Ellon is quite a short, narrow pitch, but otherwise it was ideal rugby conditions and despite some players missing, Moray were clearly the stronger pack from the outset and the whole side looked to be the more dangerous with ball in hand.

However, Ellon were clearly up for the game and Moray were unable to gain any continuity in the first half through simple errors at crucial times, allowing Ellon to capitalise and score three tries in the first half.

It was a frustrating half for Moray, with for example, turnover ball at the scrum being pulled back for a wheeled scrum and the home side then retaining the ball, little knock-ons at the wrong time, and despite outrucking the opposition being penalised for not staying on the feet.

These basic errors all contributed to a lack of continuity. Despite this, Moray managed to stay in touch with tries from Callum Manson and Dougie Ireland.

The second half looked to be heading the same frustrating way. However, the last ten minutes saw passes go to hand, moves working and with much improved continuity.

Good support play led to a try from Connor Duncan, followed up by an excellent backs move with Dale Smith cutting through from fullback to score and then finishing with real pace and power throughout the side for a try from Ewan Simpson, which was run and passed all the way from inside Moray’s 22 to score. This full length move was very nearly repeated in the last play of the game as the home side tired.

This was a strong performance, with a lot of character to keep going in the face of frustrations in play, to run out worthy winners.

Next up is the semi-final of the Caledonia Cup, against Caithness at Morriston, with the date yet to be confirmed.
