MORAY 8 - 48 RAF KINLOSS
Tue 20th Oct 2009
MORAY 8 - 48 RAF KINLOSSRAF Kinloss convincingly won the local derby Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division 2 (NW) fixture with Moray at Morriston last Saturday, by 48 points to 8.

The Elgin side kicked off and were the more threatening side for the first quarter of the match but could only muster a 3-0 lead from the boot of Stand-Off Jamie Hickie after the visitors had handled on the deck in their 22.

It was during the second quarter that Kinloss took a grip of the game and in the 25th minute they opened their account and took a 3-7 lead. A scrum was opted for at a penalty in the home 22 and from the resultant ball, the fliers centre crashed through some loose defending to score the try.

Seven minutes later, with Moray in possession and on the attack, ball was turned over at a ruck. The visiting Scrum-Half was quick to realise that it was the home Right-Wing that had tried to set the ruck and that there was no cover in his position on the field. His box kick was perfectly weighted and his Left Wing chased, gathered and ran in unopposed under the posts for a second try, This was converted for a 3-14 lead.

In the final minutes of the first half, the lead was extended to 3-17 when the home side gave away a penalty, 30 metres out, for holding on to the ball on the deck.

Within 2 minutes of the restart, Kinloss had stretched their advantage. The home side were on the attack but a pass at centre was intercepted and the try run in for a 3-24 lead.

In the 55th minute, the score increased to 3-29, when the visiting hooker latched on to a fumbled Moray line-out on the 5 metre, and he drove and made the line.

The home side continued to try and attack whenever they had possession but were losing a lot of ball in tackle situations and in unforced errors. This was evident when Kinloss scored their 5th and 6th tries, both of which were interceptions with the home side in attack. This extended the lead to 3-43.

The Elgin side kept their heads up and in the 73rd minute scored a consolation try. On the attack in the visitors 22, they were given a penalty for an infringement at a ruck. A quick tap was taken and the ball spun wide, this time with good hands, and Hickie got enough room to squeeze in at the corner. His conversion attempt just fell under the bar leaving the score 8-43.

In the last play of the game, ball from a Kinloss scrum in the home 22 was spun wide, an overlap created and the try run in. The conversion was missed leaving the final score Moray 8 RAF Kinloss 48.

Kinloss had thoroughly deserved their victory but it had been a frustrating day for the home side. Plenty effort had been put into the game but they had added to their own demise by gifting 3 intercepted tries and in not being able to hold on to ball in key situations.

A special mention should be given to the U18’s who, in the absence of a number of seniors, played and equipped themselves very well. In particular, Second-Row Connor Duncan created problems for Kinloss at the line out and got about the park well.

This Saturday, Moray are at home and play Lochaber in the league. Kick off is 3pm.
