 Moray made the short trip to RAF Lossiemouth last Saturday and returned home finding it hard to believe that they had been beaten by 27-0 in this Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division 2 (NW) fixture.
The Elgin side had probably the bigger share of territory and possession but it is points on the board that count. In defence they had been suspect and the fliers had made the most of their opportunities.
The visitors kicked off, playing with a considerable wind behind them, and immediately were given a penalty opportunity when Lossie were caught offside at a ruck. Full-back Jamie Hickie, snatched at the kick and pulled it wide.
A few minutes later, they were handed another penalty when an ‘over the top’ decision was given, 40 metres out. Hickie stepped up and this time was unlucky when the ball hit the crossbar and bounced clear.
In the 12th minute, and somewhat against the run of play, the fliers opened the scoring. A ruck was set in midfield at the halfway and a simple miss pass at centre created the space for the left wing to go over in the corner. The conversion attempt was missed leaving a 5-0 lead.
This instigated a spell of home pressure and they would have scored more had it not been for some poor passing. In the 30th minute, however, they extended their lead to 8-0 when a penalty was slotted after the visitors were penalised for a high tackle in their 22.
Moray returned to the attack and threatened the home goal line but strong defence kept them out to leave the half time score, RAF Lossiemouth 8 Moray 0.
The Elgin side’s hooker, Johnny Haslam, went off at half time with a neck injury and was replaced by Rob Jolly. He took up position at flanker with Ross Joy stepping up to hooker.
Moray ran the home second half kick off back to their 22 and a strong attack was bundled into touch 5 metres out. The line out was taken, driven and then moved out to wing Ryan Anderson who made the line, with a lot of defending bodies, but was adjudged to be held up.
A scrum five was given and scrum-half Aled Herbert made a dart for the line but he too was thwarted.
In the 55th minute, having soaked up a lot of pressure, Lossie applied a sucker punch. Having broken into the opposition half for one of the few times in the second half, a ruck was formed some 30 metres out. Ball was delivered to the centre who had chosen a great line and he crashed his way through between the visitor’s centres to score a converted try for a 15-0 lead.
The Elgin side returned to the offensive and on a couple of occasions found themselves attacking close to the home line but once again they could not break the staunch defence.
In the 74th minute, Moray lost ball in their own half after trying to take a quick throw in and in turn the Lossie right wing broke through a poor tackle to score out wide. The conversion attempt was missed leaving the score 20-0.
Two minutes later, salt was rubbed into the wounds when the referee did not pick up a ‘stone wall’ forward pass that allowed the fliers to score their 4th and bonus point winning try. The score was converted to leave the final score, RAF Lossiemouth 27 Moray 0.
Although Lossie had won the game by a convincing margin, the game was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggests. The two particular areas that the home side had the upper hand were penetration in attack and in defence. Moray will have to work hard in these areas to get their season back on track.
With the Clubhouse now back in operation after the floods, Moray will play their first home league game of the season this Saturday when Strathspey visit Morriston. Kick off is 3pm and it is hoped a good crowd will turn out.
