MORAY U-18 V HIGHLAND 29/08/09
Tue 1st Sep 2009
Last Saturday 29th August, Moray U18s travelled to Highland to start the Caledonia League season.

In very blustery conditions, it was always going to be difficult for kicking and tactical play and the first 10 minutes saw both sides trying to find some continuity and field position, but it was Moray, playing in to the strong wind who broke out with good forward support play to score out wide with a try from Callum Manson.

Highland responded and using the wind were able to keep Moray back in their own half and then when Moray were down to 14 players (two players being treated for injury), Highland were able to score twice before half time to leave the score at 14-5 for the home side.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Moray were beginning to pressure Highland and a good break at stand-off from Kieran Stephen and a good offload saw Struan Henderson under the posts for a converted try to close the score to 14-12.

With the game in the balance, Highland scored against the run of play, again out wide to go 19-12 up. The last 20 mins, Moray pressed and a wayward defensive kick from Highland was gathered at full-back by Andrew McBean who countered and set up a good score by Steven Cruikshank.

This left the score at 19-17 to the home side and despite mounting pressure from Moray, they were unable to convert that into a winning score before the final whistle.

At three tries apiece, this was a very close contest and despite some ‘rusty’ aspects to the play, this U-18 side can look forward to building on the positives for the rest of the season.
