Mackie and Moray served up a ding-dong battle but a fine 2nd half performance saw the Elgin side run out winners by 41 points to 24 in their Tennent’s Caledonia North Region League Division 2 fixture in Stonehaven.
Mackie kicked off and within 3 minutes took a 7-0 lead when they scored a converted try after turning ball over in the 22.
Three minutes later, Moray opened their account when after a drive up the middle, the ball was moved wide to wing Lewis Scott who broke a number of tackles to score out wide. Full-back Rory Millar landed the difficult kick to level the score at 7-7.
In the 10th minute, the home side regained the lead at 14-7 when they scored a converted try after some good continuity play.

Early in the second half, Moray forced an attacking scrum 5. Clean ball was taken and moved to centre Connor McWilliam who drove hard at the defence. In contact he was able to offload to the supporting Scott who ran in his third try. McWilliam added the conversion to take the lead at 24-26.
In the 53rd minute, they stretched the lead. After a period of play in the home 22, with the line being threatened on a number of occasions, Hughes took the ball at pace and drifted through a gap to score an unconverted try for 24-31.
The Elgin side were now bossing the game and in the 52nd minute, extended their lead. After a passage of good continuity play and with play now in the 22, the forwards drove for the line and wing-forward Fergus Nicol broke the defence and scored. Replacement scrum-half Gregor Hands added the conversion for 24-38.
In the final minutes, the visitors were back in the opposing 22 looking to add to their tally. A high tackle was given against the home side and Hands stepped up to land the penalty for a final score of 24-41.
