Moray were narrow 17 points to 14 victors over Ross Sutherland in Elgin last Saturday, after another close and highly contested Tennentís Caledonia North Region League Division 2 fixture.

The Invergordon side kicked off, were the more dominant side in the opening exchanges and in the 23rd minute took the lead.

A clearance from a defending scrum was gathered by the full-back and he ran back at the defence, broke a number of tackles and scored a try that was converted for 0-7.

Moray came more and more into the game and late in the half had a good scoring chance but unfortunately a knock-on in the drive for the line, allowed the threat to be cleared leaving the half-time score at 0-7.

The Elgin side started the second half brightly and in the 47th minute, levelled the score.

Ross were penalised a number of times as the home side drove for the line and a penalty try was given when John Westmacott was tackled round the neck in the process of scoring.

With the Invergordon side reduced to 14 for 10 minutes, Moray applied a lot of pressure in the opposition half and in the 55th minute, took the lead.

A penalty took them to an attacking line-out, 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken and after two driving phases, the ball was opened to the backs. Harvey Freeman came into the line at pace and burst through the defensive tackles to score under the posts. Rory Millar landed the conversion for 14-7.

The home side continued to press and in the 62nd minute, stretched the lead to 17-7 when Millar landed a penalty after an infringement at a ruck.

In the 68th minute and wIth the Invergordon sides first real foray of the second half into the Moray 22, they set up a tense final ten minutes when they scored a converted try through their hooker, reducing the lead to 17-14.

The Elgin side were determined, however, and set up some good opportunities in this period but were not able to convert them, leaving the final score at Moray 17 Ross 14.

For a second week running, It had been a hard and close encounter but the Moray side had shown good character after going a score down and in the way these closed the game out in the last ten minutes.
