BANFF 20 MORAY 18 |
Wed 15th Jan 2020 |
Banff edged out Moray by 20 points to 18 in a close and highly contested Tennent’s Caledonia North Region League Division 2 fixture in Banff last Saturday.
Moray started brightly and the game was played in the home half for the first quarter of the game. Several good opportunities were created but they only came away with a 0-3 lead when Rory Millar slotted a penalty when a ruck was entered from the side.
Having taken the lead, the visitors immediately leaked an unconverted try for 5-3 when, in their first venture into the opposition half, strong running by the Banff forwards saw them make the try line out wide.
In the 29th minute, the home side took the lead. A penalty in the attacking 22 was taken quickly and the line made for an unconverted try and 10-3.
Three minutes later, Moray levelled the score when they added their first try of the afternoon. Clean ball at an attacking line, 5 metres out, was moved wide and Lewis Scott came into the line at pace to bulldoze over the line. Millar added the conversion for 10-10.
In the 39th minute, Millar landed a second penalty, following hands in the ruck, for a 10-13 half-time lead.
Moray hoped to kick on from here but it was the Banff side that dominated the early period, scoring a third unconverted try in the 58th minute, to regain the lead at 15-13.
Three minutes later, the visitors forced their way into the home 22. Following a number of drives for the line and a couple of penalties, Millar picked up ball when a drive was held up just short , broke blind and made the line. He didn’t manage to convert his own try but they had regained the lead at 15-18.
In the 72nd minute, Banff regained the lead at 20-18 when after some strong running and a number of drives, they made the line for another unconverted try.
In the closing minutes of the game, Moray forced their way, through a penalty, to an attacking line-out, 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken and a drive set which was vigorously defended and when the ball was knocked on, the final whistle went leaving Banff the victors at 20-18.
It had been another close encounter as is typical between the two sides and a game that could have gone either way. Moray had the upper edge in the scrum and line-out but the big strong running Banff forwards posed problems in the loose.
This Saturday, Moray are at home for a must win fixture when they host Ross Sutherland in the league.
