DYCE 10 MORAY 40 |
Tue 10th Sep 2019 |
The competitive rugby season got underway last Saturday with Moray progressing to the next round of the Caledonia Regional Bowl North competition when they defeated Dyce by 40 points to 10 in Dyce.
The Elgin side kicked-off, playing up a considerable slope and in the 5th minute took an early lead. A line-out on the home 10 was cleanly taken and moved wide to the backs. Centre Jonny Haslam received the ball, prodded the ball past the onrushing defence and stand-off Rory Millar followed up, collected the ball and ran in the try under the posts. He converted his own try for 0-7.
In the 9th minute, the visitors were penalised, 35 metres out, for kicking the ball in a ruck and the Dyce stand-off landed the kick to reduce the lead to 3-7.
Moray continued to take the game to the Aberdeen side and in the 16th minute, increased their lead. A penalty took play to an attacking line-out inside the 22. Clean ball off the top of the line was quickly moved wide and full-back Lachlan Jones came into the line, broke the tackle and scored. Millar added the extras for 3-14.
Nine minutes later, good running and popping play took the Elgin side into the 22 and No 8 John Stuart tried to bullock his way over the line. He was stopped just short and a home hand dislodged the ball but it ricocheted into the hands of centre Neil Robertson who made the line for an unconverted try and a 3-19 lead.
Dyce came more into the game in the latter part of the first half and in the 35th minute, added to their tally. With wind and slope advantage, a penalty was kicked to touch, 5 metres out. A front of line take was driven and after a couple of passing phases, they made the line out wide. The difficult conversion from the touch-line was successfully landed for 10-19, the half-time score.
Moray piled on the pressure from the start of the second-half but no early points were added due to a number of inaccuracies as well as sound defence.
In the 56th minute, however, they extended their lead. Play advanced to an attacking scrum, 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken and wing-forward Steven Clark picked and drove for the line. Defence stood strong but Moray kept control of the ball and after several more drives for the line, prop Lewis Higgins spun, broke the tackle and made the line. Millar added the extras for 10-26.
Two minutes later, the home side were forced to kick the ball from inside their 22 but Jones fielded the ball, ran past the defence down the wing before chipping the last man and gathering to score a cracking solo try under the posts. With Millar adding the conversion, the score was now 10-33.
The visitors were very much in control of the game and giving the Dyce side little opportunity to get out of their half.
In the final minute of the game, the Elgin side added a seventh try of the afternoon when pressure turned over ball in the 22 and quick hands saw replacement Ian Austin make it to the line. Robertson, playing his final game for Moray before moving back south, landed the kick for a final score of Dyce 10 Moray 40.
It had been a wee bit of a rusty start to the season with a number of inaccuracies in great positions of the field but the side dug deep, dominated the second half and came away with a good win, scoring some good tries.
This Saturday sees the start of the Tennent’s Caledonia North Region League Division 2 fixtures and Moray welcome Mackie Academy FPs to Morriston, kick-off 3pm.
