MORAY 22 MACKIE ACADEMY FP 10
Mon 8th Apr 2019
Moray’s fine form continued with a hard fought 22 points to 10 win against 2nd placed Mackie Academy FP’s at Morriston last Saturday, in their penultimate Tennent’s Caledonia League Division 2 North league game.

The first 10 minutes saw both sides sizing each other up in midfield but in the 12th minute, the home side took the lead.

A breach into the 22 was halted and a scrum given. Clean ball was taken and moved through hands and set in contact.

Scrum-half Gregor Hands quickly moved ball away to second-row CJ Maxtone who crashed through and over for the score out wide.

Stand-off Rory Millar could not add the conversion points leaving the score at 5-0.

In the 18th minute, the Elgin side were pinged for’ taking a scrum down’ on their 22 and the Mackie No 10 landed the kick to reduce the lead to 5-3.

Moray produced a couple of good opportunities around the 30-minute mark but unfortunately the accuracy was not quite there and the Stonehaven side were able to clear the danger.

On the stroke of half-time, a high tackle by the home side on their 22 gave Mackie the chance to take the lead.

They kicked for touch and although they took the resulting line-out and drove, defence was strong and kept them out for a half-time score of Moray 5 Mackie 3.

Two minutes into the second half, the visitors took the lead.

After a phase of driving play into the opposition half, the ball was moved wide to the outside-centre.

With the home defence stretched from the previous phases, he picked a good line and beat a number of defenders to score under the posts.

The conversion was added for a 5-10 lead.

In the 53rd minute, with play around the 22, back-row Steven Clark charged down an attempted clearance, regathered the ball and made the line out wide.

Millar dragged the conversion attempt wide leaving the score tied at 10-10.

In the 60th minute, the Elgin side took the lead.

Following a number of driving phases, play moved to a defending line-out, 10 metres out.

The home side took the line against the throw and when the ball got tied up, an attacking scrum was given.

A powerful scrum took the pack over the line but the ball was deemed held up and a further scrum 5 given.

This time as the scrum advanced, the ball was picked up by Clark and in contact, he moved it to wing Lewis Scott who broke the line and ran the try in under the posts.

Millar added the extras for 17-10.

Moray continued to press and added a fourth and bonus point try, eight minutes from time, after a prolonged period of attacking play close to the Stonehaven side’s goal-line.

They had to be patient as on three occasions they thought they were over the line before finally getting the touch-down.

The try came from an advancing scrum 5 with Clark again picking up, finding Scott with the pop pass and the wing having the strength to break the defensive line and score an unconverted try for 22-10.

A big effort was put in by the Mackie side in the last few minutes, to at least earn a bonus point, but the home defence stood firm and the game finished at Moray 22 Mackie Academy 10.

It had been another well organised, committed and good performance by the Moray team.

Tight play by the forwards was once again exemplary and strong running by both forwards and backs caused issue all afternoon.

This created good field position where they could pressurise the Mackie defence and score some good tries.

This Saturday, Moray play their final league game of the season away to North Police Scotland.
