A strong second half performance by Garioch overturned the Moray half-time lead and saw the Inverurie side comfortably win this Tennent's Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture by 41 points to 23.

The Elgin side kicked off and following a passage of good play in the opposition half, took a 3-0 lead in the 9th minute through an Andrew McBean penalty after Garioch were caught offside.

In the 24th minute, McBean had an opportunity from wide on the touchline on the 10 metre line and when his effort crashed back off the upright, the defence scrambled to gain the ball and clear the danger.

Around the half-hour mark, the Inverurie side forced their way to an attacking line, 25 metres out. Clean ball was taken and their full-back took the ball at pace, picking a hole in the defence and scoring a converted try for 3-7.

Moray returned to the offensive and six minutes later, another leaked penalty in the 22 allowed Rory Millar to land the kick and narrow the lead to 6-7.

The home side continued to press and on the stroke of half-time, they took the lead when McBean landed another penalty, this time after a dump tackle.

Within two minutes of the restart, Garioch had regained the lead at 9-12 when following several attacking phases of play, they stretched the defence and scored.

Five minutes later, Moray forced their way to an attacking line, 5 metres out. Inaccuracy at the throw allowed the visitors to regain the ball and clear their lines.

A hot 10-minute spell towards the end of the third quarter with some good phases and strong running play saw the Inverurie side add three, one converted, to secure a commanding lead at 9-29.

In the 67th minute, with the Elgin side on the attack, the ball was spilled and a speculative kick through bounced wildly away from the home defender and straight into the hands of the visiting wing who ran in an unconverted try for 9-34.

Three minutes later, Moray took a defending scrum 5 against the head and following a couple of drives that were stopped just short of the line, David Clarke forced his way over in the corner. Millar superbly converted from the touchline for 16-34.

In the 78th minute, a dropped ball by the Elgin side over their own line produced an attacking scrum. Clean ball was taken and following a number a drives, they broke the defence to score a converted try for 16-41.

From the restart, Moray regained the ball and forced their way into the 22 and to an attacking scrum 5. With the visiting front-row depleted, an uncontested scrum was given and the ball was picked up at the base and moved to Alex Stronach who forced his way over the line. Millar landed the conversion for a final score of Moray 23 Garioch 41.

Moray had been worthy leaders at half-time but a strong display by the Garioch side combined with some good fortune and some home inaccuracies meant that they ran out comfortable winners.

The next league outing for Moray is on the 23rd March when they are away to Banff.
