ROSS SUTHERLAND 43 MORAY 1ST XV 3 |
Thu 6th Dec 2018 |
Moray 1st XV, missing a few of their more senior and experienced players, were well beaten by 43 points to 3 away to Ross Sutherland last Saturday in their latest Tennent's Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture.
The visitors put themselves under pressure early in the match when a knock-on in the 22 handed the Invergordon side an attacking scrum 5. Clean ball was taken and after a couple of phases of driving play, they broke the defence and scored a converted try for a 7-0 lead.
In the 10th minute, Ross scored a second unconverted try when they secured ball at a Moray defensive line-out and made it over the line following a couple of driving phases.
Three minutes later, Moray responded. A quick penalty was taken on the attacking 10 metre line and when the home side did not retire 10 metres a further penalty was awarded on the 22. Stand-off Rory Millar stepped up and landed the kick for 12-3.
In the 28th minute, the Elgin side created a good chance to reduce the lead further when they drove for the line from an attacking line-out, 10 metres out.
Unfortunately, they knocked-on in the process of going for the line and the chance was gone.
Just before half-time, the home side extended their lead.
A clearance kick from inside the 22 was gathered by the experienced full-back, who looked up and saw that the visitors were light on the blind side.
He galloped down the left flank, brushing off a number of tackles, before making the line for an unconverted try and 17-3 at the break.
A yellow card for a high tackle in the 50th minute saw Moray reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes and in that period, the Invergordon side used the extra man to create space and scored 2 tries out wide to stretch their lead to 31-3.
The Elgin side tried to respond and in the 65th minute, they put together some good attacking phases deep in the home 22 before being awarded an attacking scrum 5.
Inaccuracy at the scrum saw Ross snap up possession and the full-back start an attack from deep in his own 22 which, after a number of inter-passes, led to a converted try being scored for a 38-3 lead.
The Invergordon side rounded off the afternoon with a final unconverted try for 43-3 when, with Moray in attack, they turned scrum ball over and ran in the score from the half-way line.
It had been a tough afternoon for the Moray side and although they ut in a lot of hard work and had good spells in the match, Ross had deserved their victory.
They had been well organised and clinical on any inaccuracies, turning them into points, all orchestrated by their very good full-back.
This Saturday, Moray are away on league business to Aberdeen Grammar FP's.
