MORAY 2ND XV 48 DEESIDE 5
Wed 31st Oct 2018
Moray 2nd XV were convincing winners by 48 points to 5 against Deeside last Saturday in a Tennent’s Caledonia League Division 4 North fixture at Morriston.

The Elgin side started the game well with good possession in the opposition half and threatening the try line on a number of occasions.

A few unforced errors lead to a defensive scrum inside the opposition 22 and good pressure led to a hasty pass which the full-back fumbled allowing scrum-half Jonny Haslam to pinch the ball and score the first try of the day, converted by stand-off Carl Frampton for 7-0.

From the restart the home team applied more pressure on Deeside team struggling to get their hands on the ball.

Strong line speed in defence and sloppy passing saw Haslam score his second when he firstly he ripped ball from the centre and following a strong hand-off, he made the line for an unconverted try and 12-0.

Moray continued to dictate the play the boot of Frampton kept the pressure on the opposition.

The third try was scored when following a ruck infringement, a quick tap penalty was taken by Haslam and although he was brought down, just short of the line, he managed to off-load to supporting wing-forward Ruaraidh MacKessack-Leitch who grabbed it by the tips of his fingers and dived in to score an unconverted try for 17-0.

More tactical kicking followed and following another stolen ball inside the Deeside 22, the forwards carried the ball strongly with second-row Kyle Shivas receiving the final pass and bulldozing his way through a number of defenders to score under the posts the fourth and bonus point converted try and 24-0.

Good phases of play from the restart took the Elgin side back into visitor’s 22 but initially strong defending led to a try being held up. From the resultant 5m scrum, No 8 Ranald Baird broke off the scrum and popped the ball in the contact to the support Haslam who spun out of a tackle and scored his 3rd of the afternoon, an unconverted try for 29-0.

Deeside tried to finish the half strong but the home moray defence stood strong.

Moray started the second half full of confidence with strong ball carries from forwards and backs which took them to a penalty when the visitor’s infringed in trying to stop a try. With the Deeside defence at sixes and sevens, Haslam took a quick tap and made the line for his fourth and Moray’s 6th. Frampton added the conversion points and the score was now 36-0.

The home side continued to pressurise the opposition and set up an attacking scrum 5 when they drove the full-back back over his own line. A number of driving phases off the back of the scrum ensued before second-row Lee Adams took the ball at pace, attacked the wider defenders and went over for an unconverted try and 41-0.

Moray’s final try of the afternoon again came from strong carries from forwards and backs alike. Following some phases of play on the gain line, prop James Taylor took a wide pass from the ruck and was able to break the defensive tackles to score. Frampton added the extras for 48-0.

Deeside started to come to life late on in the game and scored a consolation unconverted try in the corner for a final score of Moray 2nd XV 48 Deeside 5.

It had been a strong display all-round from the Moray side who had dominated in most aspects of the game.

This Saturday, Moray 2nd XV are away to Dyce on league business.
