Moray 2nd XV were narrowly beaten by 24 points to 19, away to Peterhead, in their latest Tennent’s Caledonia North 4 fixture.
The Elgin side were slow to start and conceded three converted tries and a penalty in the first 30 minutes of the game to be 24-0 down.
They did, however, bounce back in latter stages of first period applying a lot of pressure in the Peterhead 22 and eventually hooker Lewis Higgins broke the defence to touch down in the last play of the half for 24-5.
Moray started the 2nd half as they had finished the first with strong carrying by the forwards and scored twice.
Firstly, second-row Scott Duncan charged out of his own 22 and offloaded to full-back Lachlan Jones who ran the length of the pitch to score a converted try under the posts.
Secondly and following a clean take at a line around the half-way, the ball was distributed to the backs.
The ball reached replacement stand-off Jonny Haslam and when centre Ian Austin ran a good dummy line drawing in two defenders, he put Jones into the hole to breach the defence and score his second converted try.
The Elgin side could not add to this and Peterhead came back into the game and applied a lot of pressure in the 22 but the gutsy Moray side stood up well to this and put in a great defensive effort in stopping them score any further points.
It had been a good overall display by the team and had it not been for the slow start, they may have got more out of the game.
This Saturday, Moray 2nd XV play Inverness Craig Dunain in a league fixture at Morriston. Kick-off is 3pm.
