MORAY 1ST XV 12 HIGHLAND 2ND XV 41
Wed 3rd Oct 2018
Moray 1st XV went down by 41 points to 12 last Saturday against Highland 2nd XV in a Tennent’s Caledonia North 2 fixture at Morriston.

The Elgin side kicked off but it was the Highland side that started the brighter and after 8 minutes, they opened the scoring. Following some driving play that tied in the defence, the ball was opened wide to the left wing in space and he scored an unconverted try for 0-5.

Moray were winning their share of ball but could not put points on the board. The Inverness side on the other hand made more of opportunities and a hot spell mid-way through the half saw them score three tries to increase their lead to 0-24.

The first came as the result of a quick penalty, 10 metres out, sucking in the forwards and spinning the ball wide.

The second was scored as the result of an interception with the home side in attack and the third was scored from the restart when the No 8 gathered, made ground and when his run was halted on the 22, he offloaded to the support and the try was scored.

The Elgin side began to win more ball and get back into the game and in the 33rd minute, they opened their scoring.

A scrum platform on the half-way produced good ball which was quickly moved wide to wing Lewis Scott who made good ground before turning the ball inside to supporting No 8 David Clarke who had a clean route to the try-line.

Full-back Callum Wright added the conversion points for 7-24, the half-time score.

Moray started the second half brightly and in the 46th minute reduced the lead further.

A penalty kick took them to an attacking line, 10 metres out. Clean ball was taken, driven and set and when the ball was moved wide to centre and captain Marc Higgins, he drifted, sucked in two defenders and offloaded to Wright to run in the score.

Wright converted his own try for 12-24.

The home side were back in the game and were getting themselves into good positions but a number of inaccuracies halted further progress.

In the 53rd minute and somewhat against the run of play, Highland broke and after several phases of passing play scored an unconverted try out wide for 12-29.

Seven minutes later, the Inverness side were handed a penalty for offside in the 22. The quick penalty got them on the front foot and after a couple of drives, they breached the line for a converted try and 12-36.

Moray looked the most likely to score in the closing quarter of the match but some unenforced errors and some good defending kept them at bay.

With 2 minutes to go and with the home side attacking in the opposition half, the ball was turned over and a break and good hands eventually released the Fijian centre to score an unconverted try out wide for a final score of Moray 12 Highland 41.

Highland very much deserved their victory but the Moray side had shown great improvement from the previous week and the game could have been a lot closer had they been able to make more of opportunities.

There is no fixture for Moray 1st XV this weekend and their next fixture is at home to RAF Lossiemouth on the 13th October.
