ROSS SUTHERLAND 57 MORAY 1ST XV 17
Tue 15th May 2018
Moray 1st XV concluded their BT Caledonia League Division 2 North season, last Saturday, when they were beaten by 57 points to 17 by Ross Sutherland in Invergordon.

The Elgin side got the game under way, playing into a stiff breeze but it was the Ross side that initially took a grip of the game by good kicking into strong attacking positions in the 22. In this 25 minute period, and although there was some resolute defending by the vistors, they scored two unconverted tries for a 10-0 lead.

In the 27th minute, Moray got on the board. The home side were caught offside, 30 metres out, and full-back Callum Wright stepped up and landed the penalty for 10-3.

The Elgin side took heart from this but in their next attack a mishandle in the backs allowed the home inside centre to get his hands on the ball and outstrip the defence to run in a converted try for 17-3.

In the final minutes of the half, Ross added two more tries, one getting the break of what looked like a forward pass and the other after capitalising on a mishandling mistake, to take the lead at 29-3 at half time.

With the wind behind them, Moray tried to attack from the outset but it was Ross who got a break and scored again to stretch the lead to 36-3.

In the 48th minute, the Elgin side did add a try. A loose ball in midfield was prodded forward by Wright and he gathered the ball and made the line out wide. From the touch-line he added the conversion points for 36-10.

Seven minutes later, Moray reduced the lead further. The ball went to deck in an attacking move but stand-off Frankie Du Toit quickly picked up and made ground before offloading to second-row John Westmacott who crashed over the line. Wright added the extras for 36-17.

The Elgin side looked to reduce the lead further but it was not their day as Ross seemed to be getting the breaks and they gained good territory to score three final converted tries for a 57-17 victory.

It has been a long hard season for the Moray side who up until the last few weeks had been in contention for promotion. Unfortunately with a number of injuries and unavailabilities, they could not keep up this momentum and will now finish mid table.
