MORAY 2ND XV 12 FRASERBURGH 17
Wed 17th Jan 2018
Like their 1st XV club mates, the Moray 2nd XV having not played a fixture in the BT Caledonia League Division 3 North, welcomed Fraserburgh to Gordonstoun last Saturday and after a very tight battle were narrowly beaten by 17 points to 12.

The Moray side started well and dominated the early phases of the game.

In the 8th minute, this early pressure was turned into points when centre Ian Thomson intercepted an opposition back move and had the pace to make the line out wide.

Captain Matthew Lackie pushed the conversation attempt wide leaving the score at 5-0.

The Elgin side continued to dominate and in the 15th minute stretched the lead.

Pressure was applied on the Fraserburgh team in their 22 before the ball was turned over and secured, 5 metres from the line.

After a couple of drives for the line, the ball was popped to hooker Will Nock who with the support of fellow pack members, drove over the line to score. Full-back Danny Bradley added the conversion points for a 12-0 lead.

The last 15 minutes of the half belonged to the east coasters and their big pack,

stand-off and inside-centre caused real issues allowing two forward tries to be scored.

Both conversions were missed leaving Moray with a slender 12-10 lead at the break.

The home side started the second half brightly and camped in the opposition 22 for around 20 minutes.

Unfortunately their efforts came to nothing due to some resolute defending and the fact that the referee did not punish a considerable number of blatant offside scenarios.

Ten minutes from time and with virtually their first foray of the half into the Moray 22, the visitors scored a third converted try, through their pack, taking the lead at 12-17.

The Elgin side tried hard in the last 10 minutes to get a final score and win the game but the defence stood up and the game finished at Moray 2nd XV 12 Fraserburgh 17.

It had been a very committed and good all round display by the Moray side who had the majority of the possession in the game and who were very unlucky not to come away with more from the game.

This Saturday (tomorrow), Moray 2nd XV have a league fixture, away to Dyce.
