MORAY 2ND XV 3 ABERDEEN WANDERERS 2ND XV 22 |
Wed 11th Oct 2017 |
A spirited display by the Moray 2nd XV just fell short when an experienced Aberdeen Wanderers 2nd XV side overcame them by 22 points to 3 in their latest BT Caledonia League Division 3 North fixture at Morriston last weekend.
The first quarter of the match or so was an evenly matched affair with both sides creating opportunities to score but with defences very much on top.
In the 19th minute, however, the home side took the lead. Wanderers were penalised, 30 metres out, when they pulled back an attacker without the ball. Stand-off Richard Lewis landed the kick for a 3-0 lead.
Five minutes later, the Aberdeen side responded. A scrum was taken against the head and after some strong forward running, the ball was moved wide to the left wing who had enough space to score an unconverted try in the corner for the lead at 3-5.
In the 27th minute, the visitors extended their lead. The Elgin side were penalised after a late tackle, 5 metres from their line. A quick tap was taken and the forwards ran at, and drove through the defence to score a converted try for 3-12.
Moray rallied and in the final minutes of the half, forced their way into the attacking 22 on a couple of occasions but unfortunately on both occasions, the ball was knocked on and the opportunity gone.

The Elgin side started the second half brightly and earned a penalty near the halfway line when a defender entered the ruck from the side. Lewis's penalty kick came up just short and the ball was cleared.
A few minutes later, after several phases of play, prop Harry Hancock received the ball, breached the defence and was eventually taken down 5 metres from the line. At the resultant scrum, the home side were penalised and the opportunity was gone.
In the 60th minute, the home side were penalised for hands in a scrum in their own 22. The penalty kick was landed and the lead stretched to 3-15.
Five minutes later, Moray were on the attack but a stray pass was intercepted allowing a converted try to be run in taking the lead to 3-22.
The final opportunity of the afternoon fell to Moray when centre Adam Harrison broke through the first line of defence and looked like he had scored but inexplicably the try was ruled out, a penalty given and the ball cleared leaving the final score Moray 2nd XV 3 Aberdeen Wanderers 2nd XV 22.
It had been a very committed and gutsy display by the Moray side against an experienced Wanderers side and had it not been for a number of inaccuracies, the game might have been much tighter.
This Saturday (tomorrow), Moray 2nd XV are away to Peterhead on league business.
