Muntly u18ís in their Barbarians style team along with Ross Sutherland and Stornoway continued their Cally Shield adventure with an away match at Madras on Saturday.

In what was a highly entertaining and very tight game the Muntly team prevailed in the end, winning 22-19.

Madras kicked of the match and began well putting the visitors under sustained pressure in their 22 with a series of forward drives and rucks. However the alert Muntly boys turned over the ball on the 5 m line and quickly moved it wide to Mark Cousar supported well by Angus Mohun who ran in under the posts. Fraser Mohun converted to give them a 7-0 lead after 3 minutes.

The game settled into a very tight affair with both sides probing and always keen to move the ball and create opportunities. Madras had a slight edge in the scrum and turned over a couple of put ins to keep the pressure up on Muntly.

Finally after 25 minutes the pressure told and Madras ran in an unconverted try. Five minutes later the home side went one better and scored a converted try close to the posts to lead 12-7 at half time

The visitors gathered themselves during the break and came out in the second half with renewed purpose.

Now it was the Madras scrum that was toiling and Muntly turned over ball before moving it wide. Winger Mark Cousar evaded several tackles to score in the corner and bring them level at 12-12.

10 minutes later another well worked move down the back line saw full back Lachlan Jones break through the defence and score out wide to give the visitors the lead.

Madras responded and their no 10 crashed through the visitors defence from short range on 60 minutes for a converted try and a 19-17 lead with 10 minutes left.

The Muntly team did not buckle and redoubled their efforts. They were rewarded with a try in the corner on 65 minutes from Angus Mohun to edge in front 22-19. The visitors closed the game out well and continued to put pressure on the home teams try line right until the end.

This was a superb all round team performance with sound scrum half and then wing play from Rory Millar.

Rory Hands back from injury enjoyed one of his best performances of the season and put in some powerful ball carries and tackles.

Likewise Marcus Dobson was a threat any time he had the ball in hand and also defended stoutly.

Nathan Grimwood kept the half back link running smoothly in the second half and was also never afraid to have a go round the fringes of rucks which kept the home defence occupied.

Lachlan Jones and Mark Cousar kept their scoring records ticking over with well taken tries.

Now the Muntly team move into a quarter final against local rivals Gordonston on the 4th of March which should be another close fought affair.
