MUNTLY UNDER 14/13S MAINTAIN 100 PERCENT RECORD WITH CONVINCING WIN V STORNOWAY |
Fri 23rd Sep 2016 |
After the previous week痴 success V Orkney, the Muntly U14/13 squad continued their rich vein of form against Stornoway last Saturday, and made it 3 Caledonia North Conference wins from 3.
With some of the Muntly ranks helping out their Stornoway opposition, who were slightly short of numbers, the match started with a high level of intensity as both sides tried to stamp their authority.
Solid Muntly defence and good line speed from the backs forced Stornoway into an early kick to clear their lines, only to find Muntly full-back Tom Letch who timed his pick-up well and accelerated into the corner from range for the opener.
Muntly enjoyed a further period of good possession and utilised it well with some more silky play amongst the backs.
Quick hands from fly-half Euan Willetts and centres Innes Parkin and Josh Andrew saw Letch take the ball on the burst into the line and escape the Stornoway cover to dot down for his, and Muntly痴, second.
High intensity defence, continued to reap dividends and great work at the ruck by Dylan Price and John Rodwell regained possession and, after a fine break from Andrew who combined with 2nd row Jai O達rien, No8 Corey Rizza scavenged the ball from the base of the ruck to score.
Clearly in the ascendancy, Muntly took their foot off the gas during the second period and almost let Stornoway back into the game.
A period of indiscipline and a series of offences at the breakdown ceded both possession and territory to the visitors and, but for some fierce tackling by scrum half George Lunn and second-row Gregor Clark, Stornoway may have crossed to score.
Galvanised into action, a break out by Price nearly made it all the way; however, a couple of minutes later O達rien, benefitting from turnover ball, showed a clear pair of heels to the Stornoway defence for a fine try from long range.
The third and final period saw Muntly back in control and increasing the pace of the game.
A sniping run by Iain Stuart was halted just short of the line and caused Stornoway to infringe in the ruck offside, giving away the penalty which was taken quickly by Andrew. He was held up just short and Letch ripped the ball to fall over the line.
The Stornoway defence would not let Muntly run away with the match however, and it took two superb team tries to finish the game off.
Muntly, under a degree of pressure in their own 22, secured loose possession and a half break down the blind side by Stuart, fed Letch to sidestep and accelerate to score from 70 metres.
The home support were then treated to the try of the game; picking up loose ball on the left, 30 metres into their own half, superb handling saw the ball pass through at least 7 pairs of hands, both forwards and backs, before finding its way to O達rien on the right flank who almost outstripped the defence.
Alive to the threat of the Stornoway cover, O達rien timed his pop pass inside perfectly, with an accelerating Connor Falcus the grateful recipient and he left the defence for dead to score under the posts, drawing significant applause from all watching, including the Stornoway support. Andrew converted 4 of the 7 tries to give a final score of 24-0.
Muntly now look forward to a home Conference fixture v Orkney, at Huntly, 24 September 16 .
