DEESIDE 36 MORAY 3
Tue 8th Mar 2016
A Moray side, missing a number of regulars, made the trip to Banchory last Saturday and although they produced a spirited display, they went down by 36-3 to BT Caledonia League Division 2 North leaders Deeside.

The home side kicked off, playing into the wind, but it was Moray who started the brighter and after only 3 minutes they took the lead. Following a good passage of driving play, they forced their way into the 22 and when Deeside entered a ruck from the side, a penalty was awarded. Full-back Callum Wright stepped up and slotted the kick for a 0-3 lead.

Five minutes later, a second penalty was awarded, 30 metres out, this time for handling on the deck. This time Wright pulled his attempt wide in the blustery conditions, leaving the score 0-3.

In the 13th minute, the Banchory side forced their way to an attacking line-out, 10 metres from the line. A squint line-out throw and a solid resultant scrum allowed the ball to be cleared.

It was not until the 22nd minute that the home side put points on the board. A Moray 'put-in' at a scrum went straight through the tunnel and out the other side. The Deeside wing-forward was quickest to react, picked up and released his backs and an unconverted try was scored out wide. The ball did look like it was dropped over the line in the tackle but the referee gave the attacker the benefit of the doubt and Deeside took the lead at 5-3.

The Elgin side returned to the offensive and in the 33rd minute were awarded a scrum, 5 metres out. The scrum had been strong but on this occasion, the accuracy wasn't there and the chance was turned over.

The Banchory side extended their lead in the 37th minute. The scrum half picked up from a scrum in their own half and went blind but a switch pass took the ball to the open side. Swift passing took play to 5 metres from the visitor's line. A couple of drives later, the influential No 8 broke the defence and scored a try which was converted for 12-3.

From the restart, the home side quickly returned the ball to a defensive line-out, 5 metres out. The ball was overthrown, missing the jumper and the attacking wing-forward plucked the ball out of the air and dived over the line for an unconverted try and a 17-3 lead.

This was hard for the Moray side to take as they had competed well in the first half.

In the 48th minute, Deeside scored their fourth and the bonus point try. A penalty was given for offside 5 metres from the line and a quick tap was spread wide and the second-row received the ball in the wing position and forced his way over the line for an unconverted try and a 22-3 lead.

The Elgin side rallied well and gave as good as they got for the next 20 minutes with both sides putting in a good shift in defence.

In the 68th, however, the Banchory side added to their tally. A storming run by the No 8 breached the first line of defence and immediately put the remaining defensive line under pressure. Quick ball from the resultant ruck created the space for the outside centre to score a converted try under the posts for a 29-3 lead.

Two minutes later, a very similar move saw Deeside score their final try of the afternoon. This was also converted leaving the final score : Deeside 36 Moray 3.

The final score somewhat flattered Deeside as the Moray side had competed well for long spells of the the game. The scrummage again had been strong and the defence had been very committed. The Banchory side are sitting top of the league and rightly so. They attack with great pace with ball in hand, are a well drilled as a team and took all the opportunities presented to them.

This Saturday, Moray are at home with Lochaber as visitors. Kick-off is 3pm.
