MORAY 35 ROSS SUTHERLAND 0 |
Tue 14th Apr 2015 |
Last Saturday, Moray played their pen-ultimate BT Caledonia League Division 2 (North) fixture of the season and convincingly defeated Ross Sutherland by 35 points to nil.
The Invergordon side kicked off but were immediately put under pressure as Moray showed their intent by running the ball back at them. Some good defending held them out but in the 15th minute, they were awarded a penalty when the ball was held on the deck. Full-back Andrew McBean stepped up and slotted the kick for a 3-0 lead.
The Elgin side continued to press and 10 minutes later extended their lead. A scything run by centre Cameron Renton and then a charging run by No 8 Ross Joy was halted close to the try line. The ball was set, moved quickly and prop Connor Cameron received the ball, broke the line of defence and scored an unconverted try for 8-0.
Moray were bossing the game at this stage, looking very dangerous in attack and dealing well in defence with any Ross attacks.
In the 35th minute, the visitors were caught offside on their 22 metre line. McBean stepped up and slotted the kick for 11-0, the half-time score.
Early in the second half, the Invergordon side tried hard to get back into the game but a superb run from wing Keiran Young was the source of another score for the home side. A Ross 'up and under' into the home 22 was collected by Young who set off on a mazy run which took him into the opposition 22. He was halted but recycled the ball and Renton made a breech for the line but unfortunately knocked on. A Ross forward held the ball on the deck from the resulting scrum and a penalty was given. Moray opted for the scrum and after a big drive, Joy picked up and made the line. Stand-off Chris Clarke added the conversion points for 18-0.
In the 52nd minute, a clearance by the visitors, from inside their 22, failed to make touch and wing Callum Wright ran the ball back. The defenders were in front of the kick, however, and a penalty given. Clarke prodded the ball to touch, 10 metres from the line. Clean ball was taken 'off the top' at the line and scrum half Callum Watson side stepped his way through the line and past his opposite number to score the try. Clarke added the conversion points to stretch the lead to 25-0.
Ross tried to get back into the game and forced their way into the home 22 and were awarded a penalty for offside, 5 metres out. A quick tap was taken but a big tackle dislodged the ball, possession was regained by Moray and the ball cleared.
In the 68th minute, the Elgin side scored their 4th and the bonus point try. An attack emanated from ball being gained at a big scrum in mid-field and after some strong running by both backs and forwards, Captain John Westmacott tried to force his way over the line but stout defence held him up. An attacking scrum was given and ball was moved swiftly away and through hands to the wing where McBean had enough room to score an unconverted try in the corner for 30-0.
Moray added a fifth try and probably the best try of the afternoon in the 73rd minute. Ball was won on the left touchline inside their own half and a running handling move, involving both forwards and backs, was executed impeccably and finished off in the right corner when replacement centre Cameron Hughes went over for an unconverted try and a 35-0 lead.
Ross finished the game strongly looking for a conciliation score but the home side were solid in defence and the whistle went with the final score: Moray 35 Ross Sutherland 0.
It had been a really good afternoon for Moray and probably their best display of the season. The set play scrum and line-out had been solid, defence had been excellent but it was in open play where the team excelled and they scored some really good tries to consolidate third position in the league.
Moray's final game of the League season is against Stornoway on Saturday 2nd May at 3pm at Morriston.
