SHETLAND 15 MORAY 10 |
Tue 24th Feb 2015 |
A much depleted sixteen man Moray squad made the long journey North last Saturday to play Shetland in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North, coming away disappointed by a 15-10 defeat.
Despite the best efforts of two dedicated physios, numerous injuries throughout the 80 minutes meant that Moray played much of the match with only 14 men and it was a brave performance by all 16 who travelled.
Moray kicked off with the biting northerly wind at their backs but it was the islanders who had the best of the early exchanges.
In the sixth minute however, it was the visitors who opened the scoring when Man of the Match, Ewan Stuart made a searing break to put winger, Callum Wright in at the corner for a 5-0 lead. The conversion failed and indeed the weather conditions were such that neither side had a successful goal kick all afternoon.
Fifteen minutes later Moray struck again when scrum half Aled Herbert, always aware of the half chance, took a quick tap penalty close to the opposition line and went over for the try to make it 10-0.
The islander's tactic against the wind was to keep the ball in hand as much as possible, turning down the chance to kick to touch or at goal, and this paid off in the 27th minute when a couple of missed tackles let their No.7 in for a try and a scoreline of 10-5 to Moray. This remained the score at half-time.
Early in the second period Shetland had a player sin binned for repeated infringements at the breakdown.
Moray had been dominating the set scrum and the ever reliable Neil Wiseman was securing much good line out possession, however by the middle of the half playing against the wind and on a very heavy pitch, their lack of numbers began to take its toll and the islanders levelled the score at 10-10 in the 64th minute after a long spell of pressure.
This was followed 5 minutes later by another home try when a mistake in midfield by Moray turned over possession and the ball was moved wide for the touch-down.
Moray pressed hard towards the end of the match but were unable to add to their score.
Final result Shetland 15 Moray10.
It had been a very plucky and at times skilful performance by Moray in the conditions, but in the end sheer numerical player advantage had seen the islanders home.
Moray continue their league campaign on Saturday away to Aberdeen Wanderers. Kick-off 3.00pm.
