MORAY 33 ABERDEEN WANDERERS 13 |
Tue 17th Feb 2015 |
Moray returned to winning ways last Saturday when they defeated Aberdeen Wanderers by 33 points to 13 in their latest RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North league fixture.
The Elgin side started brightly and in the 3rd minute put the first points on the board. Centre Marc Higgins tackled his opposite number in midfield and quickly got to his feet and ripped the ball clear. The ball was quickly moved wide and good hands by forwards Harvey Aj Freeman and Connor Cameron created the space for wing Matthew Stanley to run in the try. Full-back Andrew McBean landed the conversion points from the touchline for a 7-0 lead.
In the 10th minute, Wanderers conceded a penalty, 30 metres out, when hands were used on the deck in a ruck. McBean stepped up and landed the kick for 10-0.
The Aberdeen side responded in the 14th minute with an unconverted try to reduce the lead to 10-5 when they crossed the whitewash after several phases of play in the 22.
Seven minutes Moray were also penalised for handling in the ruck and the visiting stand-off landed the 40 metre kick to take the score to 10-8.
The home response was quick and 2 minutes later, McBean restored the 5 point lead at 13-8 after a penalty for a high tackle.
In the 38th minute, the Elgin side extended the lead. Clean ball was taken at a line-out on the visitor's 22 and the ball moved through hands to centre Cameron Renton who was tackled deep in the 22. He set up ball and scrum-half Aled Herbert quickly moved the ball to stand-off Jonny Haslam who drew the defence and slipped the ball to Freeman who broke through two tackles to score out wide. McBean added the conversion points for a 20 points to 8 half time score-line.
Within a minute of the restart, the lead was extended to 23-8 when McBean landed a penalty when Wanderers were caught offside.
In the 50th minute, the Aberdeen side were penalised again for hands in the ruck. McBean kept up his 100% record and stretched the lead to 26-8.
Three minutes later, Moray were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes when Renton was the man who was sin binned after the side had been warned by the referee about persistent infringements.
During the sin bin period, Wanderers added a try. A cross kick was regathered in the air by wing and ex Moray man Stuart Cluness and he had the strength to fend off a couple of defenders and make the line for an unconverted try, reducing the leading to 26-13.
The Elgin side returned to the offensive and came close to adding to their tally on a couple of occasions before actually doing so in the 75th minute. A surge of driving phases took play to five metres from the line and the visitors were penalised for infringing at the ruck. Herbert quickly tapped and in contact offloaded to No 8 Neil Wiseman who dived over for the score. McBean landed the kick for 33-13.
In the final minutes, Moray tried hard to get a fourth and bonus point try and they looked like they would get it but unfortunately the inside pass, after a good break by replacement Alex Stronach, was knocked on by replacement Ewan Stuart and the chance was gone.
Final score Moray 33 Aberdeen Wanderers 13.
It had been a good all round performance by the Moray side and they had worked hard for their victory. The scrummage and line-out was solid and the pack put in a good shift in the loose. Behind the scrum, defence was sound and the backs looked to run ball at every opportunity.
This Saturday, Moray are on the road on league business and make the long trip to Shetland.
