RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 24 MORAY 0 |
Fri 19th Sep 2014 |
The first RAF Lossiemouth v Moray local derby of the 2014-15 BT Caledonia League Division 2 North season was comfortably won by the flyers by 24 points to nil.
Moray, with a number of regulars missing, were up against it from the kick off when the home side showed their intent with strong running forward play by their big pack and a willingness to run the ball in the backs.
The Elgin side manfully stuck to the task, tackling bravely but were finding it difficult to win ball and get out of their own half.
Defence held firm until the 15th minute when the Lossie side opened their account. A scrum on the visitors 10 metre line was cleanly taken and the ball moved wide. The outside centre took a good line, broke the defensive line and scored under the posts. The conversion points were added for a 7-0 lead.
The RAF side continued to dominate the play and it was not a surprise when they added to their lead in the 23rd minute. Line-out ball was stolen 25 metres out and the ball moved to the backs. This time, the home inside centre found the gap in the visitors defence and scored out wide. A superb kick from the touch-line saw the two conversion points added for a 14-0 lead.
Moray slowly started to win some ball and take the game to the home side. In the last 5 minutes of the half they camped themselves five metres from the flyers goal line but they were held out by a very determined defence.
Half time RAF Lossiemouth 14 Moray 0
Moray started the second half brightly and had an early opportunity to reduce the lead within 3 minutes of the restart but full back Ewan Stuart pulled the long penalty attempt wide.
They continued to press but a mixture of solid defence and a lack of control and accuracy with ball in hand, meant they did not get points on the board.
Somewhat against the general run of play, the flyers stretched the lead. A mis-kick by their stand off was collected by the inside centre and he released his wing on the loop to score an unconverted try in the corner, for 19-0.
This was a turning point and the home side regained the impetus and went in search of the fourth, bonus point try.
The Moray side gallantly defended their line but in the 75th minute, a mix up in midfield allowed the Lossie inside centre to break down the left wing and score his second try of the afternoon, an unconverted try.
Final score RAF Lossiemouth 24 Moray 0.
The RAF side had been well worthy of their win. Their big forward unit dominated a a good deal of the play, driving Moray back at every opportunity, and the backs played with great pace with ball in hand. The visitors did have opportunities but did not show their usual composure to execute.
This Saturday, Moray are away on league business when they go by road and ferry to take on Stornaway, who have had an excellent start to the season.
