MORAY U18 V ABERDEEN WANDERERS - CALLY U18 PLATE FINAL
Thu 27th Mar 2014
Moray u18’s were in Inverness on Sunday for their final 15 aside match of the season and in a hard fought contest with Aberdeen Wanderers for most of the match they couldn’t get on the scoreboard and lost 18-0.

Moray kicked of the first half playing up hill and into the wind on a very muddy pitch. This made for a tight game dominated by forward play and a high tackle count for both sides.

Wanderers opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a forwards try driving the ball over the Moray line out wide to make it 5-0.

The rest of the half was a tight affair with Moray struggling to make headway up the slope but defending bravely and keeping the Wanderers forwards pick and go game well wrapped up.

On 25 minutes Moray threatened when they moved the ball from a scrum to winger Cameron Beattie on the blindside and he ran to within 5 m before being tackled into touch.

Moray continued to threaten when they took the ball in hand and ran at the Wanderers defence but could not make the killer break.

Wanderers missed a penalty from 35 m in front of the posts just before ½ time and Moray turned around to play down the slope with the wind in confident mood having stifled the opposition’s attacks for much of the first half.

They began the second half attacking from deep and a good break by second row Gregor Devlin in midfield set up a ruck on half way.

Scrum half Lewis McDonald broke on the blindside and offloaded to winger Beattie who ploughed on towards the 22 but Wanderers were able to clear the ball.

The Aberdeen team made the Moray lads task harder when after 45 minutes they kicked a penalty to touch on the Moray 22.

From the lineout they moved the ball down their backline and their big winger evaded the cover to score in the corner and make it 10-0.

Moray were still in the hunt but needed to keep their composure and too often were guilty of turning over possession when going into contact.

The penalty count also told against them and allowed the Aberdeen lads to kick their way out of trouble.

On 60 minutes Wanderers extended the lead to 13 points when they converted a penalty in front of the posts after handling in the ruck.

Moray were now trying desperately to get into the game but from the restart immediately lost the initiative when the kick off didn’t make 10 m.

This allowed Wanderers to attack again from the scrum on half way and they kicked deep in to the Moray 22.

They continued to keep play in the Moray 22 and forced a try on 68 minutes with a quickly tapped penalty being driven over to make it 18-0.

To Morays credit they fought back from the kick off and ended the match deep in Wanderers territory but to no avail.

This was a disappointing end to the season for the lads how could not be faulted for their commitment on the day but could not find the key to unlock a very well drilled Aberdeen Wanderers defence.

Had they done that and got some momentum in the game the result may have been different but it was not to be. Now the u18’s switch to 7’s to finish the season.

In the u16 Plate Final Moray lost to a strong Aberdeen Grammar side. The lads were in touch with the score at 19-27 but in the last 15 minutes Grammar secured the game with a further 2 tries to make it 19-37 at the end. Moray’s try scorers were Justin Harrison and Konnor Pritchett (2 tries) and Mike Mullen added 2 conversions.
