MORAY 5 ABERDEENSHIRE 2NDS 51 |
Tue 18th Mar 2014 |
A Moray side, missing a number of regular starters, were comprehensively beaten by 51 points to 5 by Aberdeenshire 2nds last Saturday, in their penultimate Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture of the season.
After only 10 minutes, and having competed well in close pay, the home side found themselves 10 points in arrears when two unconverted tries were scored by the Aberdeen side after breaks from within their own half.
Moray tried hard to get back into the game but in the 25th minute squeaked another unconverted try, again from open play.
In the 35th minute, the home side made their first real breach into the opposition 22 and were held up over the line.
Shire had strayed offside, however, and a penalty was given. A quick tap was taken and Captain John Westmacott drove for the line. He was able to offload and fellow forward John Stuart gathered and made it over the line.
Full back Andrew McBean couldn't manage to add the conversion leaving the score at 5-15.
The supporters thought this would be the impetus the team needed and springboard to get back into the game but from the restart Aberdeenshire re-gathered the ball and their very impressive wing forward made the break offloading to allow the try to be scored under the posts.
The conversion points were added to leave the half time score Moray 5 Aberdeenshire 2nds 22.
Moray competed well in the early part of the second half but in the 53rd minute, the Aberdeen side stretched the lead. They forced their way to a line-out 10 and having secured the subsequent throw, a move off the tail of the line resulted in the open side flanker scoring a converted try for 5-29.
Five minutes later, Shire added another unconverted try from a planned move off the back of a scrum 5.
Most of Shire's strong open play was being focussed round their open side flanker who was finding gaps and making good quick yardage in getting behind the defence.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, Moray conceded 3 further tries, one of which was converted, to leave the final score of Moray 5 Aberdeenshire 2nds 51.
It had been a very disappointing afternoon for the Elgin side. Throughout the game, a lot of good work was done in the tight and with ball in hand. With this amount of good work, they would have expected to be in a closer game but the fact was that the Aberdeenshire side were more clinical and were able to convert virtually all of their opportunities.
Their open side wing forward in particular had caused most of the damage and was pivotal in most of the tries. His speed off the mark and ability to get behind the defence had contributed considerably to his team's success. It was not surprising to find out that he in fact was a first team wing who was on his way back after injury.
This Saturday, Moray play their final Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture when they host Banff at Morriston at 3pm. The team will want to finish a good season with a home win.
