MORAY U18 V ABERDEEN WANDERERS 14/12/13
Mon 16th Dec 2013
Moray u18’s played their final league match before the Xmas break in Aberdeen against Aberdeen Wanderers on Saturday. With the game being played in atrocious conditions both teams did well to serve up a entertaining match and Moray fought back from a 10 point deficit to draw a match that neither team deserved to lose.

The first half was a tight affair and driving rain made the ball difficult to handle. Play was focused around the set piece and when either team did try to move the ball to the back line too often knock-ons or dropped passes resulted in turnover ball. Both fly halves kicked what ball they were getting to try and move play into the opposition territory but at half team neither side had broken the deadlock.

The second half saw Wanderers come out and take the initiative with some well drilled forward drives taking play deep into Moray territory. From a scrum on 5 m Wanderers picked up and drove again over the Moray line only for the ball to be adjudged held up. The resulting scrum saw another series of drives which led to a try to open the score. A well taken conversion added 2 points to make it 7-0.

5 minutes later Wanderers extended their lead to 10-0 with a penalty for offside in front of the posts.

Moray picked their game up after this and took back control of the match. They were dominating territory and trying all options to break a stubborn defence.

Finally on 20 minutes Warren Greaves got the visitors on the scoresheet with a penetrating drive from the back of lineout 20 m out to crash over for a try. Lewis McDonald was unlucky to see his conversion attempt just drift past the right hand post.

With the score at 10-5 Moray were in the ascendancy and continued to put pressure on the Wanderers defence. The pack were recycling possession well and the back line tried to move the ball through hands in spite of the conditions.

25 minutes into the second half Moray got back on level terms. A forward drive crossed the line but the ball was held up. Moray won the resulting scrum and pulled in the Wanderers defence with several pick and drives across the pitch before the ball was moved down the back line to Cameron Beattie on the wing, who crossed in the corner to level the score.

Fly half McDonald had a conversion kick from the touchline to take the visitors into the lead and unluckily for Moray it bounced back of the crossbar to leave the score at 10-10.

Moray spent the final ten minutes trying to grab the points with sustained pressure in the Wanderers 22 but the Aberdeen lads held firm for a draw.

Given the testing weather and see-saw nature of the game it would have been an injustice for either side to have lost this match.

The 2 points move Moray clear of Gordonston into 2nd place in the league. Both teams are scheduled to meet in a rearranged league match in the New Year before they take part in the Cally cup competition
