MORAY 6 ABERDEEN WANDERERS 15 |
Tue 26th Nov 2013 |
Moray bowed out of the RBS North Regional Bowl at the quarter final stage last Saturday, when they were narrowly beaten by Aberdeen Wanderers by 15 points to 6.
The Aberdeen side had the first opportunity to put points on the board, in the 2nd minute, but the penalty kick rattled back off the bar.
Five minutes later, full-back Andrew McBean had the home side's first opportunity but he pushed the kick.
In the 10th minute, Moray secured ball at a line, 20 metres out, and then moved it wide. Outside-centre Marc Higgins took the ball into contact and a mix of forwards and backs got behind him and drove him over the line and down. The referee did not see the ball being grounded and the try was not given.
Four minutes later, however, the Elgin side did take the lead. Wanderers were caught offside in their own 22 and McBean landed the resultant penalty for 3-0.
In the 18th minute, they extended the lead. This time the Aberdeen side entered a ruck from the side, in front of the posts. McBean converted the kick for 6-0.
Seven minutes later, Wanderers drove into the 22 and to a ruck, 5 metres out. The No 8 picked up, twisted through a tackle and drove over the line for an unconverted try reducing the lead to 6-5.
In the 37th minute, the Elgin side breached into the 22 and to an attacking scrum, 5 metres out. The Aberdeen side were pinged for blocking at the scrum but McBean missed the kick leaving the half time score Moray 6 Aberdeen Wanderers 5.
The Aberdeen side started the second half the brighter but it was not until the 60th minute that further points were added. The Elgin side were penalised for a deliberate knock on in their 22 and the kick took the visitors into a 6-8 lead.
Ten minutes later, Moray drove into the visitor's 22 to a line 15 out. From the resultant line, Wanderers went over the top and the penalty was given. The penalty was on the wrong side for right footer McBean and he narrowly pushed the kick past the right post.
Within two minutes, the Elgin side were back in the 22 and right-wing Lajos Garancz's run took him over the line but last ditch Wanderer tackling held the ball up.
In the 78th minute, second-row Steven Clarke was unlucky to be singled out as being the person who took the driving maul down and was yellow carded. Wanderers capitalised on this and kicked the penalty to touch, 10 metres out. Clean ball was taken and moved to the backs. A wrap around move in midfield created the space and the try was scored. The conversion points were added for 6-15, the final score.
It had been a hard fought and well contested match. The difference between the two teams had been that the Aberdeen side had taken their chances. The Elgin side were a bit unlucky as they had twice been over the try line but not got the ball down.
There is no fixture for the Moray side this Saturday but they are at home on the 7th December when they play Ross Sutherland in the league, kick-off 2pm.
