SHETLAND 10 MORAY 12
Mon 11th Nov 2013
Moray continued their winning ways last Saturday when they made the long ferry trip to play Shetland in the RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North.

The home side started brightly, having the best of the early exchanges, driving Moray off the ball in the set-scrum and taking ball against the put-in.

This forward dominance led to the first score of the match when the Shetland open-side flanker crossed for a try after a slick handling move by the backs. The successful conversion meant that Moray were 7-0 down with only seven minutes of the match played.

The visitors reply was to re- jig their front row which considerably improved their scrummaging and with 11 minutes gone centre Jonny Haslam made a powerful break, dummied the home defence and touched down under the posts.

An easy conversion by full-back Andrew McBean levelled the score at 7-7. Shortly afterwards "Man of the Match" Haslam was again in the clear but was denied by a more robust home defence.

Moray had two penalty opportunities either side of half-time, but the normally reliable McBean was unable to convert and it was Shetland who took a10-7 lead in the 52nd minute with a penalty from in front of the posts after the visitors failed to release the ball at a ruck.

The unpredictable weather of the Northern Isles then intervened, with heavy rain and hail making handling difficult and resulting in the rest of the match becoming scrappy and disjointed.

It was Moray who had the final word however, when hooker Lewis Higgins rumbled over from close range for an unconverted try.

Final score, Shetland 10 Moray 12.

Once again the Elgin side had defended well, conceding only one try.

Their next match is away to Banff on Saturday, 2.00 pm kick-off.
