MORAY 24 ABERDEEN WANDERERS 10 |
Mon 28th Oct 2013 |
Moray were 24-10 victors over Aberdeen Wanderers last Saturday in their latest RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture. The victory saw the home side leapfrog their opponents into 7th position in the league.
The Aberdeen side kicked off and after only 2 minutes, were awarded a penalty when the home side were caught offside. The penalty was landed for a 0-3 lead.
They continued their bright start but solid organised defence held them out.
The Elgin side started to come more into the game and after a breach into the 22 in the 11th minute, were given the opportunity to level the score when they were handed a penalty for off side. Wing Andrew McBean stepped up and landed the penalty for 3-3.
From the restart, Moray gathered the ball and a fine handling move, with great support, was finished off when Centre Marc Higgins stepped inside and made the line under the posts. McBean landed the onversion points for a 10-3 lead.
Wanderers upped their game and took it to the home side but the well organised and motivated defence was in no mood to concede anything and worked hard to keep them out.
Somewhat against the run of play, Moray extended their lead in the 32nd minute, again from a move that started in their own half. Forwards turned over ball and it was moved to the backs. Full back Ryan Anderson came into the line and made a surging break which took him deep into the opposition half. When he was halted, Higgins was in support and he made the line for his second try of the afternoon. McBean added the conversion for 17-3, the half time score.
Moray kicked off the second half and immediately regained the ball. Quickly they moved the ball wide and McBean found enough room to squeeze in at the corner flag. A superb kick from the touchline saw him add the conversion points for a 24-3 lead.
With the carrot of a bonus point try, the home side took ball at the restart and tried to run from inside their own 22, however, they were penalised when they held the ball on the deck. A few phases later, Wanderers had a scrum, 5 metres from the line. After securing the put in, they produced a big drive which took them over the line for a converted try, reducing the lead to 24-10.
This gave the visitors new impetus and they tried hard to add more points. The home side were determined not to allow this to happen and put in a great shift in defence. Moray too were keen to add that fourth bonus point try but they too were thwarted by solid defence and the game finished with no further points being added and Moray winning by 24-10.
It had been a very good win for Moray and they had scored three good tries from open play. Man of the Match, Flanker Joe Vickery, had a superb afternoon in open play, the backs always looked dangerous with ball in hand and the whole team had put a huge defensive effort which had been the base from which they had gone on to win.
There is no fixture this Saturday and the team make the long ferry trip away to Shetland on the 9th November. With another away game the following week, the next home game is the RBS North Regional Bowl quarter final against Aberdeen Wanderers on the 23rd November.
