MORAY 65 STORNOWAY 3  by Bob Black
Mon 14th Oct 2013
Moray returned to winning ways last Saturday against Stornoway in the RBS Caledonia Division 2 North.

In what turned out to be a one sided affair at a sunny Morriston Park, Moray dominated the set scrums, a reversal of their experience the previous week.

After only 4 minutes Moray went ahead when, following a driven line-out take, stand- off Jamie Hickey ran a good angle to touch-down in the left corner.

Stornoway immediately replied with a penalty, when home captain Aled Herbert was 'pinged' for holding back a visiting player. However a similar misdemeanour by the islanders allowed home full-back Andrew McBean to make the score 8-3 to Moray.

The home side were gaining confidence but it took until the half hour mark before they really cut loose with two tries by scrum- half Herbert and a flamboyant effort from winger Callum Watson. McBean skilfully converted all three to make the half-time score 29-3 to Moray.

With a 'try bonus point' already in the bag, Moray were quickly on the offensive at the start of the second half. Two unconverted tries, one from stand-off Hickey and one from wing Ryan Anderson, were the result of some good forward play and put the score " out of sight" at 39-3.

Three more tries followed in quick succession with Hickey completing his hat-trick and wingers Watson and Anderson grabbing one apiece. It was left to "Man of the Match", Mark Higgins to round off the scoring when he touched down following scrummage ball taken "against the head" and a 15 metre drive by the home pack. Final score, Moray 65, Stornoway 3.

A pleasing result for Moray and their supporters. However some areas of improvement will be required, especially ball retention at the restarts and line-out accuracy, before tomorrow's derby clash away to RAF Lossiemouth (kick-off 3.00pm).
