MORAY U18 V ABERDEEN WANDERES 05-10-13
Mon 7th Oct 2013
Moray u18’s final opponents in the Cally north league before the October break were Aberdeen Wanderers and the local lads took the points with a clinical display in the first half which set them up for a 46-5 win. This moves them into 2nd place in the league behind Gordonston.

The visitors kicked off in perfect conditions and Moray immediately attacked running the ball back into Wanderers 22 through their forwards before the backs took the move wide and full back Kieran Young went over in the corner to open the score.

Moray kept the initiative after this encouraging start and applied all the pressure in the opening 15 minutes with good breaks by flanker Ewan Stuart and also by full back Young.

They extended their lead when 2nd Row took a clean catch at a line out on the 22. The forwards drove the ball on before it was moved down the back line and winger Spencer Barcis went over in the corner to make it 10-0.

Moray took the play straight back to the visitors with a big clearance kick by no 10 Gaffney form their 22 which was followed up with a good chase by Jefferies and Barcis. Their forward kept the pressure up with good drives taking them to the try line before a knock on allowed the visitors some relief with a scrum on 5 m.

However the Moray pack were not feeling charitable and won the scrum against the head and no8 Drew Cooper picked up and crashed over to make it 15-0 after 20 minutes.

On 30 minutes the lead was extended to 20 -0 when from a scrum 5 drives by Cooper then Stuart were held up short before Jason Macrae crashed over.

The restart was collected by Stuart on his 22 and he broke up the blindside and took play well into the Wanderers half before offloading to Cameron Murray in support who crossed beside the posts to give Gaffney a simple conversion to make it 27-0.

Moray followed this up with another try when a shortened lineout gave them quick ball which allowed centre Jefferies to break and then offload to winger Murray who broke the defence and scored under the posts for a converted try on half time making it 34-0.

The convincing first half performance allowed Moray the opportunity to make changes and get the whole squad involved in the second half – this coupled with a spirited second half show by the visitors meant a tighter game but Moray still showed great endeavour with the ball and after 17 minutes they stole a Wanderers lineout ball on the 22 and no 8 Cooper split the defence to score under the posts. Gaffney converted to make it 41-0.

To the visitors credit they kept trying in the second half and finally got a reward for their efforts with 5 minutes left when they used a penalty on the Moray 5 m line to crash over wide of the posts and get on the scoreboard.

Moray responded and finished the afternoon with several drives into the Wanderers 22 with the visitors using desperate scramble defence to keep the Moray forwards out. The pressure eventually told when a penalty was awarded and after prop Niall Ward was held up on the line quick ball allowed flanker Will Davidson to crash over and makes it 46-5.

This was a great performance from the Moray u18’s who picked themselves up after last weeks close defeat by Gordonston.

They now have a 3 week break to prepare for the visit of Mackie who will provide another stern test but if they can maintain this standard of rugby then they can approach the game with confidence.
