MORAY U18 V MACKIE - 6/10/12
Wed 10th Oct 2012
Moray u18’s welcomed Mackie to Morriston for a league match on Saturday and recorded a well deserved 24-5 victory with some powerful forward play and incisive running from the backs allowing them to control the game.

Mackie kicked off and Moray immediately ran the ball deep into the visitor’s territory with good support and offloading from the forwards.

Mackie couldn’t relieve the pressure and the home team spent the first ten minutes camped in the visitors 22 and were rewarded with a try after captain Joe Vickery stole a loose ball at the back of the lineout, drove to the line and offloaded to Lewis Scott in support who went under the posts to open the score. Matty Smith converted to make it 7-0.

Straight from the restart Moray powered their way back into the Mackie 22 using offloads to great effect. They were unlucky not to score from a great move off the back of a ruck which sent winger Ewan Stuart over but the ball was adjudged to have gone slightly forward.

The home team were playing some great rugby and Mackie fought to keep them at bay but the Moray lads extended their lead after winning a lineout and moving the ball down their backline before centre Josh Valentine drove over. Smith converted to make it 14-0 after 20 minutes.

Mackie fought their way in to the Moray half from the restart and some slack tackling out wide allowed them to open their account with a try in the corner.

Moray responded well and attacked winning a scrum in the visitors 22. Scrum half Smith picked up and scurried over to score in the corner and make it 19-5. His attempt at the conversion only just fell short and the half ended with the home team in control.

Moray began the second half as they had finished the first with driving forward play and good handling in the backs allowing them to keep Mackie pinned down in their own half. However the visitors were putting up a stout defence and made Moray work hard to try and extend their lead.

Finally Moray broke the visitors defence after winning a scrum in their 22 and quickly going through 3 phases before Niall Ward drove over form short range to make it 24-5.

The game settled after this and some of Moray’s domination up front was blunted when the scrums had to go to uncontested due to an injury to one of Mackie’s props.

The Moray lads continued to press and showed some great endeavour but were unable to add to the score with Mackie defending well.

This was the performance and result the team has been building towards over the last couple of games. Good numbers at training has allowed everyone to raise their game and another performance of this calibre will be needed for the next league match which is away to a strong Orkney side.
