GARIOCH 49 MORAY 0
Thu 4th Oct 2012
After a number of call offs, due to injury and other commitments, a squad of only 16 Moray players travelled to Inverurie last Saturday. Garioch won this RBS Caledonia Regional Division 2 North league fixture resoundingly, by 49 points to nil.

The Garioch side took to field with a huge pack that must have averaged a stone a man heavier. The Elgin side started the brighter of the two but after making it in to the 22, struggled to make any inroads into the defence.

With only 5 minutes on the clock, Moray had to bring on their only substitute, James Taylor, after a foot injury to scrum half James Henderson forced him to sit out the rest of the game.

The first score came in the 12th minute after a big drive by the home forwards took them into the 22 and to a ruck. The ball was picked up by the scrum half and his dart took him over the line for a converted try and a 7-0 lead.

Six minutes later it was 14-0 when the visitors defence was broken in midfield.

Moray tried hard to get back in the game but in the 30th minute, Garioch extended their lead. A hand, unseen by the referee, was used in a scrum 5 and ball moved wide for the backs to score another converted try for 21-0.

Five minutes later, the Elgin side failed to deal with a chip through to the corner and the ball was reclaimed and a converted try scored for a half time score of Garioch 28 Moray 0.

Within 5 minutes of the second half starting, the Inverurie side had extended the lead. A misplaced clearance kick was gathered and the ball moved wide. The winger set up ball 5 metres from the line and quick release created the hole for a converted try and a 35-0 lead.

Moray went on the offensive and forced their way into the home 22. The defence was quickly up, however, and the ball dropped. A Garioch man got his foot to the ball and fly hacked the ball on. Two or three fly hacks later the ball crossed the line and the home man won the race to the touchdown and a 42-0 lead.

The Elgin bravely rallied, went on to have their best spell of the game but unfortunately could make no real inroads into a very stout home defence.

Five minutes from time, the Inverurie side scored their final try of the afternoon. A break took them into the visitor’s 22 to a ruck. Ball was recycled quickly and the scrum half scored another converted try from a darting run.

Final score: Garioch 49 Moray.

It had been a heavy defeat for a Moray side that had been out of sorts all afternoon. The lack of numbers and the missing key players had not helped but the Garioch side ran out very worthy winners. They possess a very big pack and a set of strong running backs and it is no wonder that they are sitting top of the league at present.

The Elgin side have not had a good start to the season and need to remedy this quickly if they have ambitions of making the top 6 at the break. At the present time, numbers are poor and this needs to be fixed quickly. The Club will be pleased to welcome anyone looking to play to training at Morriston on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This Saturday, Moray are at home and play Aberdeenshire 2nds who sit directly above them in the league. Kick-off is 3pm.
