 Moray entertained local rivals Gordonston last week in their latest league fixture. In a tough and tense encounter Gordonstoun recorded a 13-6 victory over the u18’s but the Moray lads put on a much improved display after the previous weekends defeat to Deeside.
Gordonstoun kicked off the evening fixture but Moray enjoyed the early pressure and were rewarded with a couple of converted penalties by debutant scrum half Lewis McDonald after the visitors infringed in the ruck.
Gordonstoun fought back and from a scrum in the Moray 22 they worked the ball wide through their back line to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.
The visitors continued to apply pressure to the Moray team but good fringe defence and clearing kicks kept them at bay and the half developed into a tight match with both teams’ defences on top.
Moray kicked off the second half leading 6-5 and within 10 minutes both teams were down to 14 players after a couple of high tackles led to a player from each side being sin binned.
The game was still on a knife edge after 15 minutes of the 2nd half before Gordonstoun were able to get their noses in front after converting a penalty for a Moray offside infringement.
Now the visitors sensed their opportunity and were unlucky not to score when Josh Valentine put in a try saving tackle in the corner. Gordonstoun were not to be denied and after several phases they bulldozed over for an unconverted try to lead 13-6.
Moray were not about to give up and took play into the visitors 22 where they were awarded with a series of penalties for offside infringements but were unable to use the possession and convert their opportunities into points.
This was a much improved performance from Moray and was down to some hard work at training coupled with some hard graft on the pitch. The front 5 of Ward, Haufe, Logan, Dunscombe and Scott were strong in the scrum and the back row players Vickery, Morrison, Sutcliffe and subs Faulkner and Dale tackled well. The backs midfield combo of Steven, Noble and Valentine always looked threatening.
Next up Moray welcome Aberdeen Grammar for what should be another testing match.
