MORAY U18 V HIGHLAND 1/9/12 |
Mon 10th Sep 2012 |
Moray u18’s kicked off the new season with an away trip to Highland on Saturday.
This followed last weekends warm up 10’s tournament at Deeside where Moray beat Montrose and had close matches against Mackie and Aberdeen Grammar, but were off the pace in their encounter with the hosts Deeside.
Injuries and unavailability meant the Moray lads started the game v Highland with only 14 players. Highland used this to their advantage frequently exploiting the overlap and scored 2 tries in the first 10 minutes.
Moray were playing good rugby when they had the ball and despite playing into a strong wind drove deep into the Highland half from the restart. Highland cleared their lines and put the pressure back onto Moray.
The visitor’s already difficult task was further hampered with the loss of Barcis on the wing and Andrews from the second row with injuries. Highland loaned a couple of their players to allow the game to continue.
Highland continued to exploit their numerical advantage and scored another 3 tries before half time to make it 27-0 to the hosts.
Moray regrouped at half time and played the second half with the wind at their backs and renewed vigour.
Flanker Kris Morrison was unlucky not to score in the corner after a good break up the wing. However shortly after this he was rewarded with a try in the corner from a similar move. Highland came back into the game and drove over from 5 m to extend their lead to 32-5.
Moray were undaunted and continued to press the Highland line and scored a second try with some neat footwork from one of the Highland centres playing for them, allowing him to dribble the ball across the line and score.
Moray finished of the afternoon with a great try by Lewis Scott playing centre who crossed under the posts after good rucking and dynamic play from the forwards. Kieran Rodgers converted to make the final score 32-17 to Highland.
Moray produced some enterprising play despite being at a numerical disadvantage. The scrum was strong and the Moray teams spirit meant that Highland were never able to relax, especially in the 2nd half. Once the squad is restored to full strength with players back from injury they will be force to be reckoned with.
Any u18 players in the Moray area interested in joining the team please come down to training on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at Morriston 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
