MORAY U16 V PERTHSHIRE 11/3/12
Wed 14th Mar 2012
Moray u16’s continued their Champions league fixtures with a match against Perthshire in Perth on Sunday. The Perth youngsters prevailed on the day and Moray were well beaten 36-0.

Perthshire kicked off and soon had Moray on the back foot using quick ball and moving it to their wings to stretch the visitors defence. They then switched play back across to the opposite wing and crossed in the corner to make it 5-0 after 3 minutes.

Moray clawed their way back into the game and after 10 minutes Josh Grundie broke the home team’s defensive line and took play 30 m into the Perth half before being talked in their 22.

Shortly after this Moray won a penalty on half way and Ewan Stuart tried an ambitious attempt to convert it which only just fell short of the crossbar.

After 25 minutes Perthshire were again controlling the game and were only denied a second try when Moray’s winger Alan Hunte managed to get his body under the ball to prevent the home team’s winger scoring.

Perthshire continued to hold the upper hand and stole the ball at a Moray lineout before driving over to score their second try which was converted to make it 12-0.

5 minutes later they again crossed the Moray line after winning a scrum in the Moray 22 and moving the ball to their centre who touched down to make it 17-0 at half time.

The Moray lads began the second half with more purpose in their play and started using their off load game to penetrate the Perth defences.

A break by Duncan Steven at standoff was well supported by Trevor Jones who was inches short of the line when tackled and unselfishly tried to move the ball to supporting players only to see Perth’s centre intercept the pass and take play deep into the Moray half before being tackled.

After 15 minutes Perth stretched their lead when they took a quick tap penalty in the visitors 22 and drove the ball over close to the posts. The conversion made it 24-0.

They continued to keep the Moray lads penned into their own half and another penalty was taken quickly and mover to their winger who crossed in the corner.

Moray forced play into the Perth half and were unlucky not to get themselves on the score board when a well worked move along the backline came to nothing after a knock 5 m short of the try line.

Finally the home team finished off a clinical afternoons work with another quick penalty being moved down their back line and their winger crossing to score in the corner. This was converted to make the full time score 36-0 to Perthshire.

The Moray lads were disappointed in their performance after the previous week’s efforts. The Perthshire lads dominated in the ruck and Moray seemed lethargic after the journey down. Too often the chances Moray did create were lost through handling errors and their defence was not up to the usual standard.

They will need to raise their game again for the next match against Kirkcaldy at Morriston on Sunday.
