JEDFOREST U16 V MORAY U16
Tue 21st Feb 2012
title=Moray u16’s made the long journey down to Jedforest on Saturday to play their first round match in the National cup.

This is a measure of the team’s success this season as the cup involves the top 4 teams from each Scottish district and the Moray lads were taking part after their 2nd place finish in the Cally North Premier league.

Moray kicked off into the strong wind but the home team enjoyed much of the early pressure.

The Moray team were on the defensive for the first 10 minutes and Jed opened the score with a try after a knock on by Moray in their in goal area allowed Jed to pounce on a loose ball.

Moray managed to force their way into the Jed half from the restart and were working the ball well through the forwards using rucks and drives.

They were unlucky not to score when a drive over the line was disallowed due to a knock on.

The game was evenly balanced until the 20 minutes when Jed scored after a ruck in the Moray 22 which they won and used their centres to punch through the Moray defence and score after offloading.

They scored again shortly after using the same tactic to make the score 19-0 after 30 mins.

Moray lifted themselves and had a couple of chances to drive at the Jed line but were held out by stout defence from the home team.

Jed finished the half with a soft try when they had a ruck close to the Moray line and their scrum half popped through the middle to go over unchallenged to make it 24-0 at half time.

Moray turned around at half time with the wind behind them and after 5 minutes they were on the score sheet with centre Josh Valentine charging down a clearance kick by the Jedforest no 10, before gathering the ball and going over for a try.

The home team came back at Moray and after 10 minutes they scored in the corner when a clearance kick by Moray standoff Kieran Rodger was caught by the Jed full back who ran wide of the Moray defence to score in the corner.

Moray were not giving up on the game and created several openings through driving forward play and offloads as well as good breaks by Matty Smith and Trevor Jones but unfortunate knock on’s led to the chances being lost.

Jedforest scored again with 10 minutes left when their centre broke through several tackles in the midfield to score under the posts.

Moray then spent the final ten minutes camped in the Jed 22 and were rewarded with a try by Trevor Jones when he picked up at the back of a scrum and powered over the line. Ewan Stuart converted to make the final score 36-12 for Jedforest.

The Moray lads put in a gutsy performance and were strong in the scrum and lineout as well as creating good chances through diving forward play. A bit more composure and support of the ball carrier will allow these opportunities to be converted into points.

This weekend Moray have a home game in the National Bowl against either Ayr or Biggar.
