 Moray travelled to Kirkcaldy on Sunday for their first fixture in the Caledonia Champions League and despite having a team of 14 due to injuries and players being unavailable they put in an heroic performance and ran the home team close for much of the match before going down to 3 late tries 41-20.
The game kicked off in perfect conditions and the Moray lads were quick to assert themselves with some great driving by both the forwards and backs which took the ball into the home teams 22.
After a couple of phases of play Alex Dale went over to the right of the posts to open the score.
The Moray team threatened again from the kick off but were thwarted when Kirkcaldy intercepted a pass between the Moray backs and ran in from half way to tie the score.
The commitment being shown by the Moray team was huge and Ewan Stuart at centre put in a crunching tackle on the Kirkcaldy fly half which was quickly followed by another one to break up an attack.
 Moray were always looking dangerous when they had the ball and a long kick by Ewan Stuart took play into the home team 22. The full back kicked clear but only as far as the Moray full back Josh Grundie who ran the ball from half up the wing and after evading several tackles offloaded to Stephen Hughes in support who went over in the corner to make it 10 -5 after 20 minutes.
Kirkcaldy came back at Moray and scored after kicking a penalty cross field which stretched the Moray defence and allowed their winger to cross in the corner for a try which was converted.
Moray were undaunted and from the kick off forced a scrum in the home teams 22 after the full back knocked on.
Moray won the scrum and drove closer to the try line before Kirkcaldy won the ball in a ruck and kicked clear to Moray full back Grundie who was able to run in for a try in the corner to make it 15-12 to Moray.
Moray spent the rest of the half encamped in the oppositions half and putting in some great breaks with superb support play but were unable to add to their points tally.
 Moray kicked of the second half and continued to control the game. They won a scrum inside the home teams 22 and Trevor Jones at no 8 picked up and drove over in the corner to stretch the lead to 20 points to 12 for Moray.
Kirkcaldy won a lineout and moved the ball wide through their backs and despite an unseen forward pass went over in the corner to make it 20 points to 17.
Kirkcaldy were playing a kicking game to try and stretch the Moray defence but Grundie at full back was covering deep to great effect and ran back at the home team every time to take play into their half and create attacking opportunities for the visitors.
The effort that Moray had been putting in was beginning to take its toll and Kirkcaldy pulled in front again after winning a scrum in Moray’s 22 and moving the ball through a couple of rucks before their big prop piled over from 5 m out to score.
They stretched their lead further after a penalty in the Moray 22 was quickly moved wide to stretch the defence. The try was converted to make it 29-20.
At this point Moray went down to 13 men with Ewan Stuart retiring due to an injury.
 Kirkcaldy used their superior no’s to put in a couple more tries making the final score 41-20 but the Moray lads never gave up and were still threatening the home team right up until the end of the game with Aarron Logan being bundled into touch in the corner just before full time.
This was one of the best games the Moray lads have played this season and the commitment shown by all involved will be needed again when they make the long trip to Jedburgh this weekend to play Jed Forest in the last 16 of the National Cup.
