MORAY 64 LOCHABER 0 |
Tue 14th Feb 2012 |
Moray returned to action last Saturday and comprehensively defeated Lochaber by 64 points to 0 in their latest RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North fixture.
The Fortwilliam side started the brighter but after 10 minutes and in their first foray into opposition territory, the home side took the lead.
A scrum centre field was picked up by No 8 Stuart Harrington and moved through hands to centre Chris Clarke who drifted through the defence before offloading to stand-off Craig Forster who scored under the posts.
Full-back Andrew McBean landed the conversion points for a 7-0 lead.
Three minutes later a second was added. Lochaber were caught offside in their 22 and the Elgin side chose to scrum. Ball was picked up and driven blind.
A couple of forward driving phases later, Harrington burst over the line for the unconverted try and a 12-0 advantage.
The visitors tried hard to get on the score but the Moray defence was solid. In the 31st minute, they extended the lead.
A sweeping break into the opposition 22 was set at a ruck. Ball was moved through hands to wing Ryan Anderson and he outstripped the defence to score in the corner. McBean superbly landed the kick from the touchline for 31-0, the halftime score.
Five minutes into the second half, the Elgin side scored their fourth and the bonus point try. A running move down the left wing was set and then moved quickly right to create the space for centre Phil Abbott to score an unconverted try out wide for 24-0.
The restart ball was secured and moved to Anderson who made 40 metres and then started a handling move which saw Abbott receive the ball, dummy a pass to the wing and then step inside and make the line for his second try.
McBean converted for 31-0.
The home side were in complete control and in a 12 minute spell, mid half, scored three further tries to stretch the lead to 50-0.
Firstly, Anderson scored his second, a converted try, when he finished off a driving and popping move by the forwards.
Secondly, Prop Lewis Higgins drove over to score a converted try after picking up from a ruck set close to the line.
Thirdly, after some more good handling by forwards and backs, Anderson scored his third, an unconverted try, when he ran past three defenders to score in the corner.
Lochaber had no answer to the power of the running play of the home side.
In the 70th minute, Moray added their penultimate score of the match. A handling move in the opposition half, took the ball first wide left and then right.
Harrington received the ball out wide and he turned it inside to replacement wing-forward Connor Duncan who made it over the line. McBean converted for 57-0.
The final score came in the 75th minute when scrum ball on the Lochaber 5 metre line was taken against the head and wing-forward Neil Wiseman picked and drove over the line.
McBean added the conversion to leave the final score Moray 64 Lochaber 0.
In muddy and damp condition, it had been a good all round display by the Moray side.
The forwards were solid in the tight but it was the handling abilities of both backs and forwards that had been impressive. Conditions were not ideal for a handling game but the home side ran at every opportunity and must be commended for doing so.
This Saturday Moray are away to RAF Lossiemouth and need to win to keep their League winning hopes on track. These local derby fixtures, however, are always hard fought and physical encounters.
