MORAY 45 ABERDEEN WANDERERS 17
Fri 11th Nov 2011
Moray returned to winning ways in their latest RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North fixture last Saturday when they convincingly Aberdeen Wanderers by 45 points to 17 at Morriston.

From the kick off, it was the Aberdeen side that started the better and for the first 10 minutes of the game put Moray under a considerable amount of pressure in their 22. The home side defence stood firm but in the 11th minute they gave away a penalty in front of the posts which was duly kicked to give the visitors a 0-3 lead.

In this opening spell, the Elgin side lost Prop Jason Ogg (broken nose) and centre Declan Fives (leg injury). In the 13th minute Moray replied, somewhat against the run of play and in their first real attack. Some strong running play by the forwards saw the ball set at a ruck in midfield. Quick ball was despatched and replacement centre Ryan Anderson took the ball at pace and drifted past 4 defenders to score under the posts. Full back Andrew McBean add the conversion points for a 10-3 lead.

Wanderers continued to attack the home line and in a 5 minutes spell midway through the half were handed a couple of long range penalties which were missed.

In the 29th minute, the Elgin side stretched their lead. A scrum on the opposing 22 was moved right then set. Quick ball was moved right again and stand-off Craig Forster found a gap between his opposite number and the inside centre and made it to the line for the score. McBean converted for 14-3, the half time score.

Moray kicked off the second half and immediately regained the ball, breached into the 22 and set up ruck. The ball was moved from the break down and second row Steven Clark barged over the line for the score. McBean landed the additional points for a 21-3 lead.

The home side were now dominating the play and in the 49th minute, Anderson scored his second of the afternoon and the bonus point winning try. A backs move was started by Forster in midfield and after looping his inside centre, he straightened and then put Anderson into the space to score the try. McBean converted to stretch the lead to 28-3.

Four minutes later, a fifth was added. Forster broke from his own half and was halted around the 22 on the right side of the field. Ruck ball was moved left and Anderson attempt to make the line was also halted. Captain and fellow centre Marc Higgins was on hand though and he picked up and crossed the line to score out wide. McBean was very unlucky with his difficult conversion attempt as it rebounded back off the post leaving the score 33-3.

The Aberdeen side rallied and two minutes later scored when their scrum half dummied a pass and sprinted over the line for a converted try to reduce the lead to 33-10.

In the 64th minute, Moray again stretched the lead. A penalty was given 5 metres out and scrum half Aled Herbert quickly tapped, spun and scored out wide. McBean magnificently kicked the conversion from touch for a 40-10 lead.

Moray’s final points of the afternoon came in the 77th minute when ball from a solid scrum on the opposing 22 was moved through hands to wing John Hester and he beat his opposite man to score. McBean’s conversion attempt narrowly missed leaving the score 45-10.

In the final play of the afternoon, Wanderers scored a sceond converted try under the posts leaving the final score Moray 45 Aberdeen Wanderers 17.

This was a win full of character against the team currently sitting at the top of the league. (Moray still have 2 games in hand) The Wanderers side had started really well and had the upper hand in early exchanges. Moray defended resolutely and when presented chances in the first half had taken them well. The Aberdeen side must have wondered what they had done wrong to be 14-3 down at half when they had put so much into the first 40 minutes. In the second half, however, the game was more one sided as the home side stepped up their game with the forwards dominating in the tight and loose and the backs making the most of chances and scoring 5 good tries.

This Saturday, there is a local derby at Morriston Playing Fields when Moray play RAF Lossiemouth in an RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North fixture, kick off 2pm.
