GARIOCH 19 MORAY 12 |
Tue 25th Oct 2011 |
Moray suffered their first defeat of their RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North campaign last Saturday when they were narrowly beaten by 19 points to 12 at Garioch.
The Inverurie side got off to a great start when after only 2 minutes they took the lead. Some strong running by the forward pack pulled in the defence and quick ball was shipped wide and the inside centre made it over the line for a converted try and a 7-0 lead.
Garioch continued to keep the pressure on the visiting side and in the 16th minute increased the lead. A good offloading handling move and a number of missed tackles saw the No 8 burst through and make the line for a second converted try and a 14-0 lead.
Moray slowly came into the game and found themselves in good positions on a couple of occasions but some unforced errors saw the ball turned over and the threat cleared.
In the final minute of the half, however, they got themselves on the scoreboard. A penalty 30 metres out was despatched to touch 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken at the resultant line out and the ball shipped wide. Stand off Craig Forster looped and then delivered a flat pass to full back Ryan Anderson coming at pace and he broke the line and scored. He converted his own try to make the half time score Garioch 14 Moray 7.
Five minutes into the second half, the Elgin side closed the gap. An offloading move by the forwards down the left flank dragged in the home defence and a quick handling move saw Anderson again enter the line, break the defence and score the try out wide. This time he pushed his conversion attempt to leave the score 14-12.
Moray were now back in the game but in the 53rd minute and against the run of play, they conceded a third try. Some loose tackling around the half way line saw the home scrum half get past the defence and an offload allowed the inside centre to run in an unconverted try for a 19-12 lead.
In the last 20 minutes of the game, the Elgin side tried valiantly to breach the opposing line. They got themselves into good positions on a number of occasions but the home defence held out for the 19-12 win.
It had been a very physical and close encounter. Garioch had started strongly, had made the most of their chances and had always looked a threat in midfield. Moray had done well to come back from 14-0 down to 14-12 but did not quite manage to kick on and secure the win. A couple of lapses in defence had cost them dearly on the day.
This Saturday, Moray are away to Stirling to play Bridgehaugh in the second round of the RBS Caledonia Regional Bowl.
