MORAY 61 PETERHEAD 5
Tue 27th Sep 2011
Moray scored eleven tries on their way to comprehensively defeating Peterhead, by 61 points to 5, in the first round of the RBS Caledonia Regional Bowl at Morriston Playing Fields last Saturday.

In the 7th minute, the Elgin side forced their way to a ruck inside the opposition 22. The ball was moved from the break down and a couple of phases later, wing–forward and captain Marc Higgins breached the defensive line and scored an unconverted try for 5-0.

Two minutes later, it was 12-0 when stand-off Craig Forster dummied and then split the defence to score a try that centre Andrew McBean converted.

In the 13th minute, an attacking move took the home side into the 22 and a ruck was set. Quick ball was shipped and a swift handling move reached wing Steven Cruickshanks and he had the pace to run in the try. McBean landed the penalty to stretch the lead to 19-0.

Five minutes later, they added another when a scrum against the head was picked up by No 8 James Taylor and he crossed the line. McBean landed the conversion for 26-0.

Moray were in command with the forwards winning good ball and the backs causing real problems for the visitors. The Peterhead side, however, went on to have their best spell of the game and in the 29th scored an unconverted try when their stand-off picked up loose ball in the 22 and broke through a couple of tackles to score, reducing the leeway to 26-5.

The home side regained the initiative and in the 33rd minute scored the final points of the first half when full-back Ryan Anderson scored an unconverted try after he broke a couple of tackles on the opposition 10 metre line then made the line for a 31-5 lead.

With only two minutes gone in the second half, the Elgin side stretched the lead. A penalty was pushed to touch 10 metres. Clean ball was taken and the ball moved through hands to Anderson in space and he scored his 2nd try of the afternoon, an unconverted try.

In a four minute spell around the 50th minute, Moray added two further unconverted tries for 46-5 through McBean, after an overlap was created, and through replacement centre Cameron Hughes, after a fine mazy run.

Anderson scored his hat-trick try in the 63rd minute after a loop move created the overlap. McBean’s conversion attempt came up short, leaving the score 51-5.

The Elgin side scored their 10th try of the afternoon in the 74th minute when good ball was won the in opposing 22 and shipped wide to replacement wing John Hester who scored an unconverted try for 56-5.

In the final play, Anderson scored his fourth try when he picked up a misdirected clearance kick, stepped inside and then made the line for an unconverted try and a final score of Moray 61 Peterhead 5.

The Moray side had been too strong for their Peterhead opponents and had bossed the game apart from a 5 to 10 minute spell in the first half. The forwards had been strong in the scrum and disruptive in the line and the backs were tight defensively and had always been a thorn in the side with ball in hand.
