MORAY U16 V HIGHLAND - 25TH SEPT 2011
Sun 25th Sep 2011
Moray welcomed the Highland U16 to Morriston for their 4th league match of the season on Sunday.

Moray kicked off on a great day for rugby with perfect conditions apart from a slight breeze across the pitch. The first ten minutes of the game were evenly balanced with both teams testing each other’s defences.

Moray won a couple of penalties and moved Highland back by kicking to touch but were unable to increase the pressure from the resulting lineout’s.

Highland started increasing their share of possession and from a tap penalty drove the ball into the Moray 22. Quick ball from the ruck meant that the Moray defence was stretched and Highland went over on the wing to open the score after 10 mins.

The Highland scrum was proving difficult for Moray to contend with and their Hooker was contesting strongly for the ball. Highland added 2 tries on 15 min and 20 min from scrums which were turned over and the back row then picked up and drove over.

Shortly before Half time Highland added another try from a lineout when the ball was thrown long and then driven upfield to set up a ruck. Highland moved the ball to their wing who went over near the right hand touch line.

Half time score was Moray 0 Highland 24.

The second half saw Moray up their game and frustrate further Highland attacks with strong tackling and good defence around the ruck with scrum half Matty Smith putting in a huge effort to frustrate the visitors.

Highland were not to be denied though scored after a chip kick over the Moray defence bounced perfectly for them and was taken up the pitch before being passed out to the wing who scored in the corner. They added a further try shortly after again by moving the ball quickly away from a ruck and scoring in the corner.

Moray throughout the game had never given up and were rewarded for their efforts when Matty Smith pounced on a loose ball and broke up field. A ruck was set up in the Highland 22 and Moray moved the quickly down the back line to Toby Jeffreys who went over on the right to score. Kieran Rodgers added a superb conversion.

Highland finished the game with a try from half way after a turnover to make the final score Moray 7 Highland 41

This was a step up for Moray in terms of the challenge compared to previous games and they managed to compete for around half the game but lapses in the scrum defence for a spell in the first half meant that they were always chasing the game.

The tackling was as strong as ever and both U15’s Will Davidson and Calum Gaffney contributed greatly when they came on as replacements. Moray will need to work on aspects of their game before the trip to Orkney next month for what will be another tough match.
