MORAY 17 CAITHNESS 44 |
Tue 23rd Aug 2011 |
Moray played Caithness in their first pre season friendly last Saturday and after a hard fought encounter went down by 44 points to 17.
Within minutes of the kick off, they found themselves 0-5 behind when the visitors went over in the corner after a sweeping handling move.
The home side replied positively and in the 9th minute levelled the score at 5-5 when second-row John Westmacott drove over after several driving plays in the 22.
Three minutes later, they took the lead when stand-off Craig Forster scored an unconverted try for 10-5 after some strong running play.
In the 19th minute, Caithness levelled the score from a push over try after a scrum 5.
On the stroke of half time, the visitors regained the lead. Ball was taken against the head at a scrum on the home 10 metre line and then moved wide to the wing who made the line for a converted try and a 10-17 half time score line.
Moray should be really proud of their first half display as they had equipped themselves well against a side that prior to league re-organisation, were three leagues above them.
Five minutes into the second half, Caithness extended the lead to 10-24 when a break took them inside the home 22 and then over the line a couple of drives later.
A penalty kick in the 50th minute took them further ahead and two minutes later, another try was scored when ball was again taken against the head, this time on the half way line. This extended the lead to 10-32.
The visitors were bossing the scrums and 15 minutes from the final whistle, they scored a converted try, for 10-39, after a good handling move in the backs.
Moray showed character, and rallied, and in the 73rd minute scored after a period of pressure in the visitor’s 22. Captain and centre Marc Higgins was tackled 10 metres out but fellow centre Ryan Anderson was on hand to pick up the ball and cross the line. Higgins landed the conversion for 17-39.
From the restart, Caithness regained the ball, spun it and scored the final, unconverted try of the afternoon leaving the final score Moray 17 Caithness 44.
Moray had given a good account of themselves against a well drilled Caithness side. The scrum had been a bit of a struggle as they had been exposed to full scrums for the first time in a number of years, something that the visitors have been used to in the league they have been playing in.
The first league game is Saturday 3rd September when Moray are away to Aberdeen Wanderers.
