MORAY U16 V HIGHLAND – CALLY CUP 1ST ROUND |
Wed 23rd Feb 2011 |
Moray met Highland at Morriston on Sunday in the Cally Cup. Following their success against Stornoway the team were ready for a strong challenge from the Inverness team. The game was played in good conditions and both teams showed great commitment from the start.
The game settled into a seesaw pattern with both sets of players creating chances and probing the opposition’s defences. Highland were on the attack when Moray turned the ball over on their own 22 and from the ruck Cameron Hughes received the ball and broke through the Highland defence to run 70 m and open the scoring. The try was converted from in front of the posts by Ewan Stuart.
Highland came back at Moray but the home team’s defence was sound and prevented the visitors from scoring until they put together several phases of play involving the forwards driving and using offloads to break the Moray defence. The Highland backs moved the ball out to their centre who made a neat side step and cut back inside to score 10 m in from the touchline. The conversion was missed but Highland were right back in the game.
Moray responded well and spent time in the Highland 22 and were unlucky not to score when a forward drive crossed the line but the ball was held up. Back chat to the ref and some indiscipline led to Moray being moved back from the Highland 22 when they were putting the visitors under pressure. They also squandered chances by taking the wrong option and failing to move the ball wide when there were overlaps to be exploited by the fast Moray wingers.
At half time the score was 7-5 to Moray.
The second half opened with Highland on the attack and early in the half their forwards scored after several driving phases taking the ball into the Moray 22 and crashing over for a try. The conversion was missed.
The Moray team still had plenty to give and from the restart cleverly switched the play to the blindside. The ball was won midway between the 10m and 22 and moved through the backline to Kieran Cowie who sprinted in breaking tackles to score on the opposite side of the pitch in the corner. A difficult conversion was missed but the game was delicately balanced with 20 mins to play.
Moray were gaining in confidence and from scrum on half way Cameron Hughes and Hal Endersby executed a perfect dummy scissors move to open up the Highland defences. Cameron was able to power through to the try line with support on his shoulder and score making the lead 17-10. Another tricky conversion for Ewan Stuart was missed.
Highland would not give up and came back at Moray but stout defence kept them at bay. Moray played out the last 10 minutes of the game in a very controlled manner by keeping Highland pinned back in their own half and even when Highland did manage to break out with a minute to go the Moray backs were able to cover and prevent the visitors scoring.
This was another close fought encounter with Highland and Moray now move on to a home match against the winner of Strathie Sharks v Deeside in the next round. The same level of commitment will be required for this game and another performance of this calibre will be needed to progress in the cup.
