For their information, Moray RFC would like to pass on the following communication received from the SRU to all club members and supporters:
- Verbal abuse of match officials -
Dear Sir/Madam,
At a recent meeting of the Scottish Rugby Council, concern was expressed at the reported level of verbal abuse directed at match officials so far this season. Abuse in any form runs counter to the underlying spirit of our game. Verbal abuse of referees and of assistant referees also breaches the code of conduct for the game and directly affects both the recruitment and retention of match officials - without whom, as some teams have already found this year, we have no game.
I am therefore writing to all clubs to remind them of their responsibility to ensure that match officials are treated with courtesy and respect by players, coaches, committee members and spectators, and to confirm that Scottish Rugby will take action as necessary to eliminate such abuse from the Scottish game.
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all clubs to appoint a match official liaison officer who would be responsible on match day for welcoming match officials, introducing them to club officials and making them aware of the location of changing rooms, etc. A number of clubs have already identified a person who fulfils this role and I know their assistance is appreciated by visiting referees and assistant referees.
It is important to stress that, while standards have slipped below what is acceptable at only a small minority of clubs, we must all be vigilant in ensuring that this issue is stamped out and the highest possible standards are maintained.
